Seriously. I don't get it. Age of Wonders 3, Master of Magic, Fallen Enchantress, Wesnoth, Kings Bounty Crossworlds, AoW SM. I own them all, and I have never played this genre before a few years ago.

Yet for some damned reason, every time I launch Homm 3, or 5, its like video game crack cocaine. On a conceptual level, I should enjoy Age of Wonders more, I understand the rules, and they are more complex on the tactical level (flanking, weaknesses, etc.), as well as allowing for more dynamic strategic choices like alliances and vassals. I play strictly singleplayer, and from what I've heard the HoMM series is known during its glory days more for its multiplayer.

I guess I'm asking why you folks still play the earlier HoMM games YEARS on, so that I can pinpoint what it is. I've never played any of the HoMM titles on release, as I was into other things at the time, so nostalgia has no power here. :P

So what is it that keeps you guys coming back to HoMM?

Sense of adventures. It has RPG, tactical and strategical elements while also being relatively accessible for a 4x game yet it nevers feels dull, generic or even repetitive like a mobile game would.

One of my favourite things when I began playing HOMM 3 was uncover the entire map and understand all the stuff that is going on, I remember being really scared going underground finding level 7 monsters guarding stuff.

Also, artifacts. I really like them, seeking them is fun.

I recently began playing HOMM 4 again as I really never delved into it much to play well with the Heroes (having them in combat is the best feature in that iteration IMO). :)
yeah, the feature of having your heroes as actual units really makes me play HOMM4 more than any other HOMM, its my personal favourite, together with HOMM2, HOMM3s artstyle just puts me off, its subjectively appalling for me. As an advice: launch HOMM4 in win98 compartibility mode and make your GPU render it in its original 4:3 resolution, it looks really good then!
Heroes is more of a strategic wargame than a full-on 4X, which means it doesn't get bogged down with a lot of the heavy management aspects that something like Endless Legend, Eador, or even Age of Wonders occasionally deal in. I like those games quite a bit, but Heroes has a purity of focus that makes it more accessible and easier to pick up for several hours at a time.
The fun comes from aquiring resources,xp,items to improve your heroes so you can aquire more resources to improve the hero even more and so on. I think Eador does this even better

That was very well put! The Heroes series has always been my favorite probably because the emphasis is on combat but it has just enough resource management to keep it interesting. I also think the artwork (I've liked ALL of it) and music put one in an almost hypnotic state.
