Cross-posting here since the 2 forums for MM and HoMM are separate, and the question is related to both.

So I'm playing the Might and Magic universe games in release order, and unfortunately I just realized that although HoMM4 was released before MM9, both its expansions were released afterwards. Unfortuntely I already finished the first expansion for HoMM4 and started the second, before playing MM9.

So:

Do the HoMM4 expansion plots in any way reference the events in MM9. Should I stop playing now in case I come across any MM9 story spoilers?

As far as I'm aware, MM9 is in a completely separate universe than the rest. Sort of like how HoMM5 is in a separate world/story line from the previous games.

Well, from the little I read, MM9 seems to take place "after the destruction of Enroth", so it is in the same universe (broadly speaking). Do you mean then that it's a different "new" world from the one in HoMM4?

From what (admittedly little) I've seen, If it is in the same world, then it is in a very different part. HoMM4 has a lot of carry over from the previous HoMM games, culturally speaking. There are the different factions with recognizable creatures and so on.

MM9 has a very Norse feel to it, which I haven't seen anywhere else. Some names have carried over, like Nicholai, but I seem to recall that even those are different characters (like Sandro shows up in HoMM4 and HoMM5, but he isn't the same Sandro).
Just did some looking around on the internet, and found these quotes from Wikipedia:

"The game takes place in the fictional world of Axeoth, in the Chedian region of the continent of Rysh. ... The change to a new world with little direct connection to previous storylines was prompted by the destruction of Enroth, as depicted in Heroes of Might and Magic IV, which also takes place on Axeoth. Unlike Heroes IV, however, Might and Magic IX makes only passing reference to the series' previous setting. Only one character from previous games in the series, Nicolai Ironfist, makes a return appearance, though King Roland Ironfist and the Kreegan are also mentioned."

"The continent upon which Heroes IV takes place, which was settled by refugees from Enroth, is located far across the sea,[6] and is not referenced in-game."

So, I seem to remember correctly that they are very unrelated, though HoMM4 and MM9 are indeed on the same world (probably like MM7 and MM8 were on the same world).
