Hi,

I'm trying to get HOMM 2 to run on Linux Mint 8 using Wine 1.0.1 but having no luck.

Following instructions in other threads on this forum I've changed a couple of lines in the dosboxhomm2.conf file - namely; "output=opengl" and changing the "\" to a "/" in the "imgmount d" path (which I believe solves the sound problem).

This has rendered the game bootable and sort of playable but as you can see from the attached screenshots its far from perfect as I have window borders and the screen isn't centred. I've tried setting "fullscreen=false" in the .conf file and then manually switching to full screen once its started but I get the same result.

Any suggestions?

Also, it seemed logical to attempt to run the game through Linux native DOSBox at first. This also ends in failure - I navigated to the correct folder in the terminal and used the command "dosbox -conf dosboxhomm2.conf" to launch it. It launches (in fullscreen!!) absolutely fine but then gives me an error message stating there's no CD in the drive and I'll only be able to play as a guest in a multiplayer. There's also no sound.

I know its possible to play it perfectly well on Linux but I think I'm missing something somewhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers guys.

Try DirectDraw for the output mode instead.

No problem bro. I've had trouble running dosbox games on linux using anything other than DirectDraw. It seems to be the only mode that doesn't cause problems.

especially as the native linux version of dosbox has no support for ddraw ;)
So you are using the surface default.
