I just finished Hand of Fate but I think I only managed to because of a bug.
In the final battle of the game, I could not drop unter 1 Live. So no matter how many hits I took, I was unable to die.
While I have no problem with that (not having to try to run through the last game over and over again), I think it is not intended to work that way.

Also: It is strange that the main screen of the game doesn't change whatsoever after you beat the game. I read in the forums, that there should be a message displayed after the credits, but nothing popped up on my srceen. Also, shouldn't the background be destroyed? It shanges after you beat every major encounter inbetween, but not after the final battle.

I'm running the GOG Version 1.0.2 of the game.

The devs know about this bug as it has been reported a few times on Steam already, Patch 1.0.2 only addressed minor bugs. The big ones will be squashed in a later patch.

Also Speaking of patches, version 1.0.3 appeared on Steam yesterday. As usual the GOG version comes a day or two later, below you can see what to expect from it (taken from Steam):
