This one's for the new players who wish to get into the series fuss-free. Some of you may be wishing to implement some changes in regards to screen resolutions and whatnot, but I encountered some slight problems which can make for some tedious troubleshooting.

Here's how it all panned out for me:

1. Installed Gothic 1.

2. Set up a custom resolution.

3. Installed the Gothic Player Kit.

4. Installed the Unlock framerate patch.

5. Changed the blood amount.

6. Played for a great deal of time until Gothic started crashing due to ACCESS VIOLATION ERRORs.

7. Searched around and found the source of the problem: skeleton mages. The details are outlined here. Use ctrl + f.

8. Also started encountering game freezes at a specific location (Fog Tower).

9. Searched around some more and found the source of that problem too. According to here, the Player Kit appears to cause this issue, so I uninstalled it.

10. Reinstalled Gothic 1, thinking it was necessary to have a "fresh install".

11. Encountered problem with Gothic 1 failing to start.

12. Searched around again and found the solution here. The answer: end the rundll32 processes in task manager first. Gothic 1 was starting up again.

13. Installed Gothic Player Kit and Unlock frame rate patch again (it seems I didn't learn my lesson).

14. Played for a while then started noticing that Gothic 1 was randomly freezing for a few seconds every time the camera was turned.

15. Gave up on playing with the frame rate patch outside of the Fog Tower and used the Gothic_backup executable.

16. Finished the game.

In the end, I probably spent about three hours dealing with the problems mentioned above. Maybe this will ensure some of the new players out there will spend more time playing than dealing with unnecessary crap.

It was an interesting game by the way.

s3rialthrill3r: Installed the Unlock framerate patch.
Don't used it.

Nowadays it makes more problems than it "solves"...
(fixed FPS being a "problem" depends on the player's belief ;-) ).

Sorry, was that a command or a statement about whether or not you ever used it? In any case, I'd have to agree as I eventually went without it because it was more trouble than it was worth.

I'm the author of the hack that disables the framerate limit.
At first it looked like a simple hack to get a slightly better "performance", but over the years I received more and more feedback about problems that are caused by unlimited framerates. So the recommendation is to not use the FPS hack.

Ah, I see. Well, for what it's worth, the hack did work well for quite a bit of my playthrough. I suppose a warning should be included in the sticky then. I don't think it has been touched since 2011.
