I'm a bit of a sucker for open world fantasy games, so when I saw this I pretty much jumped at the chance to get it for a few pounds. I love the GOG service, but like everyone says, this game makes you want to hate it. I've spent roughly three quarters of an hour playing, and most of that was spent wrestling with the controls, but it looks like it will be great once I get my head around it.
I'll persevere with this, after all, most of these games require you to overlook some pretty horrible technical issues :)

Well, the controls aren't the fault of GOG, that was the way the game was in boxed edition as well. IMO the controls make the game unplayable. I can't stand trying to have two hands on the keyboard, and my eyes on both the keyboard and the screen.
I tried it several times and gave up. Then I used the software that came with my gamepad to make the gamepad keys equal certain keyboard keys and the game is a thousand percent different. It goes from being unplayable IMO to being one of the best ever. If you have a gamepad, I HIGHLY recommend using it. Can't tell you what a world of difference it makes to be able to play this game like that. It is amazing with a gamepad. Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 are the best games I've played on any platform, once I configured them for my gamepad. (Stay away from Gothic 3 though IMO. Not nearly as good. The best was probably 2, but the original is a very close second.) If you can get your hands on a gamepad that allows you to configure it for specific games so that the gamepad buttons equal keyboard strokes (like my Logitech gamepad does), try it. If you find it's worse, you can always go back to the keyboard. But for me, it's just not even close. This game, with the quirky need to use two buttons simultaneously was made for a gamepad.
Heh :)
The controls are legendary. Still, most peple get used to them during the first hour. I used to reconfigure them almost completely, but once you have things in you "usual place", there's merely just the "action+forward" and target selecting hurdle to take.
Gothic 2 greatly improves the controls with only minor changes, IMHO. And once you mastered the G1/2 controls, you'll see how horrible the stupid-o-controls of Gothic 3 are. Which, by the way, I recommend to avoid like the plague.
