I went the long way and swam into Khorinis. That was cool and I did several quests in town. Then after I went hunting with Bartok the guards wouldn't let me back in to the same gate that Bartok and I had just gone out. I tried alternately wearing leather armor and citizen's clothes but no dice. I told them the herb story and he said "ok, in you go" then attacked me when I walked in.

What do I do? Thanks

I'm thinking , since the guards never let you in, that you still have to tell them (and show) the herbs you are collecting for the alchemist, wear farmers clothes and tell them you are getting supplies for the farmer, or bribe them.

I find the easiest way is to collect 10 of the same herb - I usually have them already without any special effort. I was amused that I got credit for swimming in one time when I opted to go in near the lighthouse. I only swam from the rocks near the sewer gate to the ramp with the boats. The guards should let you alone now.

Plus it's the most XP-rich way. You'll get 100+50 XP instead of 50 when disguised as a farmer or zero when using bribes/Canthar's pass.

That's my problem. I went in thru the harbor. But after I went hunting with Bartok, on the way back in the front gate they stopped me and the herbs seemed to work. The guard said "in you go" but he attacked me when I walked in.

Well, they shouldn't... The only thing that comes to my mind is that they probably think that they saw you sneaking into the town behind their backs (because they saw you in the city, but you haven't used any "legal" way). In that case, you probably should've tried to sneak out of the city, so they wouldn't see you. Anyway, they're probably simply bugged.

I wasn't attacked when re-entering either. Wait - which guards did you show the herbs to? I think only the guards on the farm side allow entry without a bribe.
