I decided to become a Mage of Fire in the original Gothic. The mages gave me a Firebolt spell when I joined their order. However, I already had a Firebolt scroll that I had dabbled with prior to that.

So my question is this: how does a spell rune differ from a spell scroll? The runes are a lot more expensive, but I haven't seen any difference in their use.
scrolls are consumed when used whereas runes aren't.
Ah, I see. That makes sense. I checked for that but perhaps I misremembered how many Firebolt scrolls I actually had.

Is there any way to improve the base damage of rune magic spells?
i guess you refer to normal gameplay? ;) no, damage done by magic is fixed.

On the downside, runes generally take a lot more mana to use then scrolls.
