Is there any plan for the Community Patch to fix the potion-drinking speed so a character doesn't have to run 3 miles from combat to drink a potion? The speed at which a character gets rooted to the ground, sloowly puts away their weapons, sloowly drinks a potion, sloowly has it do anything, and sloowly redraws the weapon is incredibly obnoxious.

Not gonna happen. Or at least, not for a 7 year old game that no one is releasing patches for anymore (development concluded with CP 1.75). The aim was to fix the game, not radically change gameplay or upset any resemblance of balance aka potion spamming Diablo Style. If you prefer a twitchier approach but still like Piranha Bytes games, you may want to consider the Risen Series which incorporates a lot of standard fare convenience features.

So the question is why would you want that, is it because of your overall preference or because you're having difficulties in the game. If its the former, can't be helped here, if it's the latter, just aggressively raise your HP/Mana (wherever the issue lies) pools at shrines, it helps a lot more than you think, since monster damage scales with your level to some extent. The choice was deliberately made by the devs to prevent people from powergaming to the end with your stating health.
If you can get to a higher ground i think it's safe to drink there so you don't have to run away too much, can't remember. Also having em potions on hotbar helps a bit, but you probably keep em there already. I think i didn't use potions all that much or only when i had room to do so, in battle i focused on the battle (blocking, distance, enemy observation etc). Even think i discovered potions half-way through the game or something like that, so a good alternative would be to save often and not rely on em to much although it's kinda rough that way ;)

I've pretty much beaten the game at this point, just noticing that for most intents and purposes stamina potions are practically useless (better with alternative AI but still). The potions and such just don't hold up as well once you have any kind of regeneration because you'd be taking them to speed up regeneration in between battles... which doesn't help much since if you have enough time to drink a potion (i.e. you are NOT being attacked because it is way slower than it should ever be designed to be) you may as well just let it regenerate a bit.

Basically what I mean, potions just don't serve any kind of realistic use.

I just use the magical character menu

Nameless Hero: "Hey Orcs...Orcs...guys...give me a minute to drink this healing potion, please"
Orcs: "Yeah no that's cool...take your time, maybe choose items more suited to the situation while you're at it, no problem"

Potions do have a use in Gothic 3 but you can easily play the game without potions OR regeneration. I didn't learn any alchemy skills until I was almost finished in Nordmar (and was already finished in Myrtana) and I never did find that guy that teaches health regeneration.
