Is it possible to recruit more than 1 companion? The games doesn't allow me but I stumbled upon a forum conversation (can't find the link again now...) where some users claimed they were using a combo of Diego and Angar...

It is possible, but especially the mentioned case can only happen later in the game. Also you arent forced to have more than one companion, most of the time having more than one of them is done by doing 2 or more quests at the same time. Further you will travel most of the time even alone.
