OK, I tried searching the forums and support threads, but none of the solutions offererd there have helped me. I've got the GOG version of G2 Gold and it installed without any problems. However, when I try to launch the program it just stalls, that is, nothing happens. Looking at the task manager, under processes I can see that there is gothic2.exe running, but the programs tab is empty and the game simply does not launch.
I've tried closing any processes that are running in the background, that can be closed. I've disabled my anti-virus. I've set compatibility to XP SP2 mode (and SP3 and Win2000 and etc.) and I am running the program as an administrator, but to no avail. Nothing seems to help. The game just will not launch.
Note that I do not have a GeForce graphics card - those seem to cause problems with G2 (judging from the threads here). I've got an ATI HD5850. And my OS is Win 7 32bit home premium (and a quad core Intel processor, an i7 860, if that's relevant).
Any help would be appreciated. I'd really like to get this game running. Help!!

Have you tried redownloading/reinstalling the game? maybe it got an error...also try to not tab out while the game installs which sometimes makes it not install well, although it has only happened to me with Return to Krondor
OK, I've found a fix for this. I'll report it here, just in case it could help others with similar problems (that is, running G2 Gold with Win7).

Download the fan-made patch from World of Gothic called GothicStarter 2.6a (teh linky: http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=90 ). Unzip it and put the files in their respective places in the Gothic 2 game folder. Hey presto! Gothic 2 launches and the world is again a much better place to be! ;)

I tried following these steps and I get an error (attached).

I also receive the same error when I try to launch the game through GothicStarter_mod. Any solutions?

I often wonder if the problem is really Win7 as many people, myself included, have not had any related problems. Perhaps the problem is how the individual machine reacts with Win7. If so, the fixes would be legion.
I had this problem as well, but it was caused by a permissions error or something correlated to Windows 7. I couldn't even run the dxdiag, I had to use an old file to submit a report. I ended up leaving the users homegroup, uninstalling the intrusive iTunes software, and restarted my computer. For some reason, the files in my GOG folder have a little lock icon but now run without having to hit the share file right-click option. I hate Microsoft, I honestly hate everything about their system. Gothic 2 now launches normally after all I did.
