So i wont spoil the ending here for anyone else dont worry.

But i have to say it left one hell of a soure taste in my mouth. Basically it only works/makes sense
if you expect a sequel to come out to tie it all together.
So either the developers are keeping the story hostage so they can "secure" money to make
another game, or i am hella missing points.

And i know this sounds like a really grumpy thread (tbh i am grumpy for you devs killing the cat
even for a few seconds! :( ) but im really just left unsatisfied through and through.
Either you should be fair and say outright that this game is part of a series so people can prepare for it,
or you go the save route of tied together ending for the first game with a tiny hint of more to come, then
cliffhanger in the second game and full on big finale at third.

As it is right now who can guarante that you guys will ever get to finish this story?
Other than as i mentioned before, the hostage situation of "you want an ending? then give us money!"

The devs were well aware that the ending might not be received well with everybody and they also knew that it was quite open ended and they wanted it this way. The ending works as it is but of course it leaves some things open. They wanted to tell more stories and they probably will continue this one but even without a continuation you get kind of closure ... not a true one but at least the actual danger is gone ... now it's up to our heroes to get deeper into the rabbit hole.

But if you like you can discuss yout thoughts directly with them here:

Just finished the game now.

Overall I'm happy with the ending. Yes it was quite open. Yes there are a few things hinted at that weren't tied up. But ultimately I think it fit the story and the source material.
Maybe I'm used to Lovecraft's writings where things usually go "something weird happened, then it got crazy, then madness ensued and everyone died except the sole survivor telling the story, and nothing is really explained because mankind simply can't comprehend the terrible madness of the great old ones".

I'd love a sequel. I liked the characters (although 1 of them needs much more development imo) and it's obviously open to much more storytelling possibilities, but if there wasn't one I'm still pleased with the game and its story.

I remember the secret of monkey island 2's ending was really odd and didn't tie things up. It was still a fantastic game. (maybe that plays to your point of saving it for the second game in a series, but imo if it's a good game it's a good game no matter where it sits)

This. All in all, I thought Gibbous was fantastic, the ending leaves a few things open, ofc, but it can stand alone well enough. But to answer your question: no, you're not alone, OP, the end is a point of criticism that comes up rather frequently, although I disagree. Maybe it's a question of taste, I like it when things are left to one's imagination rather than trying to be tied up badly, e.g. they did with the "The Room" series, which had 6 endings, and all were just garbage. Compared to that, Gibbous did everything outstandingly well, although I see why people take issue with the ending, it's a sentiment I don't share.
