I've got the retail copy and it works on Vista; no idea about Win7 though.
I had fun with it the first time I installed it, years ago, but when I tried to play it again recently - not that much. I've never played through it (but I didn't have enough patience to play through Diablo 2 either, so maybe that's not saying anything).
It can be a bit hard, I think, in any case you always need to watch out for 4 samurais at the same time because you're playing a group, not a single character, but in real-time. You control only one character of your choice, but you can switch between all and the others follow you and fight by your side and you need to keep an eye on their health status etc., too.
Also, while you're exploring the lands with your group of four, three more samurais are sitting on the "substitute's bench". IIRC you can exchange party members whenever you want to, but only those by your side will gain xp. So you also need to watch out that the others don't get too far behind if you're always using the same "team" of four (or less).
