I'm a big fan of trains, especially freight trains.
Any suggestions of good PC games that involve trains?

Skip titles like "Trainz" , "Microsoft Train Simulator". I'd like a more realistic simulator than these games. Well Trainz Simulator 12 seems very good but I can't seem to get it to work because it need a new serial number every now and then. Very annoying.

I remember a game I use to play on Amstrad CPC 6128 when I was a kid. You had to drive a military train with guns mounted on it and fight incoming enemies. You had to stop the train before it reached a bridge and sink some ships, otherwise they would blow you away.

Maybe something similar would be good, an action-simulator game. Or a plain simulator but realistic.
I don't like it when you have a mission to take the train to a specific station to unload passengers or cargo and nothing happens when you get there. No passengers boarding or leaving.

Oh and I've already seen "Sid Meier's Railroads" and the "Subway" series (again no passengers).

Have you looked into "Railworks 2" and the 74 (not kidding, there's 74 of them) pieces of DLC? I know it's available on Steam.
Maybe I am missing something, but it seems that the only two options would be forward and backward.

What is the appeal of a train simulator?

Isn't Railworks 2 a part of the Trainz series?
I'm now checking a video of it at YouTube.

And what's this 74 thing? Some kind of add-on package?

lukipela: As far as I'm aware: all the DLC in total is worth more than a thousand dollars

There are 74 different add ons.
Checked the trailer. It's graphics are far too crappy for a 2009 game, plus it's a part of the Trainz series.

Any other suggestions?
Not exactly what you're after, but have you thought of looking at Transarctica? It's available at DotEmu, and is a fantastic game - sort of Elite, but on a a train.

An adventure game. Seems interesting.

As it seems there isn't much of a variety in train simulators or action that involve train. Realistic ones that is.
Maybe something in strategy game?
Sid Meier's Railroads and Railroad Tycoon were good enough. Any other titles?

The Train: Escape to Normandy

Awesome game, I played it on commodore 128, but it was released on PC. You had to run a train to escape from France occupied by Nazi Germany.

Truly a great game. If only there were any similar games.

I don't get it. What is that? Is this some kind of online game?

I higly doubt there's a game similar to this one, but on the other hand, yesterday I discovered there was a sequel/remake of an old game, I always wanted to play on my c128, but it was only in german. The game's title is Vermeer, and new version is The Great Art Race.

I googled two sites you may want to check:

http://www.railserve.com/Computers/
http://memorexa.com/en/categ-Railroad_and_Train_games-380.html

Both contains links to games connected somehow to trains. Let me know if you find anything similar to Train: Escape to Normandy.

It's an open source remake of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, which is the best rail (and other modes of transport) strategy game of all time.

Unfortunately Train: Escape to Normandy is not in the DosBox compatibility list.

Transarctica however is.

The only way to see it is through an Amstrad or Commodore emulator.
Or if you have a downgraded PC especially built for such old games and of course find someone who has the original PC version.

It is. Look for "The Train : Escape from Normandy 1988 0.61 supported"
