Nroug7: The WII-U Might not be a full next-gen console, it may be, but i dont really care. If it comes cheap then i will buy it to bride the gap between when its released and the xbox next or PS4. after all, their not going to be re-releasing those games on xbox next or PS4, so i may as well get them in their best version rather then the xbox 360 or ps3 versions.
Nintendo stuff is never "cheap", any savings on the console purchase will immediately be eaten up by the sheer amount of extra accessories they manage to pack into the thing... I doubt that second touch screen is gonna be cheap, for example...

Different countries define cheap in different ways i guess. fact is, i doubt it's gonna be $900 (Sony's PS3 price here on launch)

Tormentfan: To be fair there are only 3 'real' games that do it, (a few more psn titles) 4 demos and a couple that only output 1080 screenshots, and I'd imagine the 360 would have even less games that could... btw, there are some strage resolution setups on that list.

That pretty much shows the problems current gen has.

orcishgamer: I'm only backing michaelleung, it's possible. I don't think anyone said it was common relative to the total number of available titles. And it's not entirely clear that it's the hardware's fault in some cases. Still, we're talking about 2005 hardware that can pretty much do what the new Wii U can...
I still diagree with your wording Orcish.. they're not pretty much doing what the Wii U will do.. the Wii U is going to support it across the board (whether it's actually done or not is another matter).. but it's clear that the PS3 and xbox have major trouble doing it unless it's a simple situation.

EDIT.. and I don't think I'm being too pendatic when I try to clarify that distinction.

Sounds like worthless speculation to me. We will see what actually happens with the Wii U when we can actually see what happens with the Wii U.

lowyhong: I went with the Wii rather than wait for the Wii U. I want to play Viewtiful Joe, and the Wii U has no backward compatibility :(
The current run of Wiis doesn't even have backwards compatibility. =(

Nintendo did a Sony...

orcishgamer: Yes, but the 3DS launched without a single good game and with a distinct lack of upcoming good games announced for the next year. It's fine to launch without a ton of games, but if you launch with no good games and no good games are currently in development, well then you're probably screwed.
Wait, the one thing the 3DS did have on launch was good games in development. You don't care for (the idea of) Paper Mario 3 or Luigi's Mansion 2? Mario Kart 7 and Mario 3D Land were shown to be in development by the time of launch too. There were lots of great looking games in development, they just haven't managed to get most of them finished yet.

ET3D: I might buy the Wii U if it lets me play my Wii games at 1080p. But I'll wait for the specs, price and reviews. I'm actually leaning more towards an Xbox 360, because Kinect looks to me like it will be fun for the kids.
That what I'm saying but I might not buy it.

Wait, what? What do you mean by current run of Wiis?

Actually it will be backwards compatible, with all games and peripherals from the Wii. So you might want to hold out for a bit longer.

Edit: Wait did you mean compatible with gamecube stuff. In which case no it wont, not even the newest Wii models are compatible with the gamecube anymore.

Holy shit, I think I've got the latest Wii model. How can I tell if it's compatible with GC games?

Well is there anywhere to plug in GC controllers and memory cards? On my older Wii they are just behind a flap.
avatar
michaelleung: Oh wow, the Wii U does 1080p! Shocking! Like, oh, the two current-gen consoles.
Neither the PS3 and Xbox are powerful enough for 720p for most games, let alone 1080p.

I think there is, yes. The Wii is kept in the box right now, but I'll take it out tomorrow morning and have a look. Thanks!

Does it have GC controller sockets and memory card slots?

EDIT: Whoops, ninja'd by a few hours. I really should check the whole thread first...

I just can't believe some people ask that question. Wait. This is the internet.
