I remember it being a side scroller, with nes graphics.
it was a platformer, and you were in a maze like level where you find little keys while there were hzards along the way.
im pretty sure you couldnt "Attack" anything
The world map was similar to zelda 2 minus the enemies.

I just remember playing it at school along side other games like the incredible machine and kid pix, and chips challenge.
Commander Keen?
Can you provide us some more details? The description is a little ambiguous. I know you are trying to remember it, but anything helps.
Im trying to think. I just remember it being platformer heavy. Color scheme for the first few areas was like white and blue. I cant recall if there were enemies or not. I know it was key heavy and a small wall with a keyhole blocked a lot of rooms. I think the over world map(zelda 2 like) had path blocked off by blocks with key holes.

Neobr10: Commander Keen?
I thought Keen has a laser gun? Maybe I'm wrong.
Sounds like one of the Commander Keen games .
No it wasnt keen because the school was all anti violence (religious) um.. Iirc, the level layout was block y looking.
Bible-Man? :D

Actually that even has shooting in it. He shoots rays of light out of his bible and conks out sinners. NO I'm not making this up. :P
Ok, I finally figured it out (thanks to a friend) and I think i was off a bit in details xD

If you liked that game, play Jill of the Jungle, much better. ;P

It honestly doesn't look like too bad of a game, it seems like a mix of a bunch of different old games, the music is pretty good and you gotta love that sound effect when he picks up a key; "YEAHHH!"

Huh, never heard of it but did jumping on a turtle count as violence back at your school?
Serious question

However i just saw in a gameplay video in which the main bibleman does a cool "YEEAH!" when he picks stuff up and obliterates frogs with his inverted crucifix boomerang while listening to the fun background music.
