Not so long ago we released a bunch of classic RPGs set in the Dungeons & Dragons world of Forgotten Realms. Today the spotlight falls upon a younger, but extremely popular setting - Eberron.

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/dungeons_dragons_dragonshard]Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard offers an interesting blend of genres. As the story progresses you will travel on the surface of Eberron and through the underground realm of Khyber. Here's where the genres get divided.
On the surface, Dragonshard is a real-time strategy with base building, amassing armies and everything else you would expect from an RTS game. Among the available unit types there are champions, lumbering Juggernauts, captains and regular soldiers. Only the captains can follow your chosen champion underground.
In Khyber, the realm beneath Eberron's surface, Dragonshard becomes a party-based dungeon crawler with role-playing elements, as befits a game bearing the Dungeons & Dragons name. Although it doesn't use the D&D ruleset, you'll have no doubt that you're playing a solid RPG.
Overall, a superbly designed game in an acclaimed setting, with an interesting story split into two campaigns that will keep you occupied for days. That's the Atari game that made you go to the underworld.

sidv88: Is it possible to play multiplayer with this version of Dragonshard offered here?
I would also like to know the answer to this question.

I played the multiplayer extensively. It is especially fun if you 'team up' with another player and clear the dungeon rather than fight each other. You can build up a nice little army with all the drops.

AlexY: This looks like Warcraft III with a different UI. Or is it just me?
Nothing more wrong, plays totally different
I really like "Dragonshards", although it is the only real-time strategy game that I like. I had read the books beforehand of what it was based on, with warforged and stuff, and I loved getting to play a game in that universe. It was cool, although RTS just doesn't appeal to me much, I much prefer turn-based.

But still, I love this game, so I'm glad it made it onto GOG.

RafaelLopez: I like D&D games and I never played this one, although I've always been curious about it. The fact that it doesn't use the D&D system made me scratch my head, but I'll put it on the wishlist. Thanks for adding it to the site.
You can't use a RPG system like D and D for a strategy game. It is an RTS set in the D and D universe. Think the Original Warcraft games and World of Warcraft. Same setting, but totally different game systems.
Frankly, the D and D aspect is pretty much a marketing ploy.

I'm HIGHLY interested in this but wondering what the RPG element is for.

Is this so that you can level up your heroes and soldiers and find new spells and equipment for them during the above-ground RTS war?
I have issues with the lack of love given to the Eberron setting when CRPGs are involved. They have made a grand total of two titles -- this one, and the free-to-play MMO -- and haven't shown any intention of making more. They're still putting out games set in the Forgotten Realms, though, and I've gotten a little tired of it.

Seeing that this title has very little to do with the setting or even the RPG it's made for, I think I'll be taking a pass on this one, with no small amount of disappointment.

I don't see why the D&D can't be used, if I understood well there's a dungeon-crawling experience, and even on the surface world each henchman could be a "Human Fighter level 3 STR 16", elite units being higher level, monsters using their original Monster Manual stats, and so on. All characters in Warcraft 3 had certain stats, it was just simpler than D&D.

That won't keep me from trying the game though. Any D&D game sparks my interest, even if only a little interest.
I'm playing the demo. D&D rules don't apply to the game just the characters, world and story. Doesn't bother me much and the game is pretty decent.

From what I've seen of the first level it's more of a role playing game than an RTS. The RTS aspects are for constructing units and adding them to your hero's venturing party.

The first level didn't pit me against an enemy base like an RTS would but rather a large enemy boss that you needed seven leveled units to bring down.

Each stage scores how well you played and gives bonus money as reward which is used to purchase things to equip to your heros making them stronger for later levels or replaying levels for better ranking.

Generally you go through each level with one hero that you choose, from about five different ones, to start the stage with and then construct and add RTS units to follow him around.
Later on in "Dragonshards" you will have to defeat enemy bases, but it's not all that.

I dislike real-time strategies compared to turn-based, and yet I liked this game. :)

I agree, Eberron is a fantastic setting well-versed for games. I play Dungeons & Dragons Online and the amount of lore and fantastic sights offered in that game, an action-MMO, makes me wish we had a proper single player CRPG set in Eberron. Enough with the Forgotten Realms already!

Heck, I've been bugging Turbine for years, trying to get them to expand the MMO into places other than Xen'drik. I mean, seriously -- I'd like to see the city of Sharn in 3D, or be able to actually ride a lightning rail.

'Course, I've also been pestering them to add gnomes, and artificers, to their game, but instead they focus on half-breeds and favored souls. I am disappoint.
