tfishell: 200 rep, registered back when GOG was "Good Old Games", and you haven't read an "abandonware talk" post yet? ;-)

Ghostbreed: Actually, it is just now that I've been starting to browse the "general" section of the forums. 4 almost 5 years too late. :P
Ah okay.

Yeah, turns out there's some people who just create accounts to buy games here and don't even thinking about contributing to the forums - weird huh?
Leeches! (j/k)

Well, with 200 rep, obviously he was contributing to the forums but I assume that came from the game specific forums.
That I did. I post mostly in every subforum for the games I own.
Glad to see a thread here about Powerslave. That's a fantastic game. Powerslave and Witchhaven are my two favorite Build games, it's a shame GOG doesn't have them here yet and isn't likely to in the future.

Fever_Discordia: I would support the 'Pokemon' model if that's the way GOG had decided to go but they haven't...
I 100% percent agree! GOG should try to release every classic game they can get their hands on, instead of "curating" the selection. It's not like there are tons of websites where one can legally download old games. By refusing to sell more obscure games GOG is forcing potential customers to resort to abandonware. Steam has caught on and is releasing more classics (with DRM), but GOG doesn't seem to care.

If you feel similarly vote for this wish: http://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/stop_curating_classic_games
Not to advocate anything, but I don't get why people have such a massive hitch over obtaining software of long extinct developers and companies, publisher be damned.

One indeed can validly argue that rights may have gone to current companies, creditors & debtors. That is valid. But then there comes the concern, 'What if the new stakeholder doesn't care?' Consider all the franchises being left to languish by the likes of Sega, Square-Onyx, and Konami. Just consider how much consumers had to push for Nintendo to release Earthbound onto the Virtual Console, despite the platform being available since 2006.

Those are direct companies. You can contact them, and they'll probably say a worthless nothing unless you ask about the absolute legal status. But then you run into things like WeGo Interactive. Who to be blunt, are code thieves, and probably scraped the rights for Re-Volt off the floor of some UK law office. They don't care about consumers or even fans. They just want the greenback and aren't one to think about legal consequences.

Onto the next point, I know of a classic DOS based screensaver, Dazzle. Recently, the maker of said screensaver forfeited their business. With no publisher, that means Dazzle.exe is technically lost to time, abandoned one might say, despite having never formally having been. But how can one say legally? Would I have to call a tax office in an obscure Texas town and inquire?

If it isn't obvious by now, I'm pro abandonware.

However, if GOG were to pick up some abandoned rights and fix up the games as they do, I'd be happy to pick up the ones that I am interested in. :V

But I'm not about to rake the earth for an obscure game that went out of print over 10 years ago. I had to move 1300 miles and give up basically every physical game I owned, running across 4 console generations. (NES, SNES, N64, and GCN). I'm not about to go wasting hundreds of dollars to track these things down. I owned them all in the past and to put it simply, Retroarch+Android makes things a whole lot more simple.
