So i finally got fast enough internet to be able to actually play online. (4Glte mobile hotspot) So the thing I'm wanting to play most is GTA 5 online. It works fine the first day or two. Then after that it's almost non-stop connection problems. I managed to play long enough to make some friends and join a crew. Most days I'm able to play for about an hour or two amongst all the time-out errors and connection errors and simply not being able to connect at all.
Once you make friends it really keeps you trying to play even though it doesn't work 70% of the time. But i finally just lost my patience. It's really driving me mad and filling me with seething hatred. I'm not the type to throw my controller or rage quit if a game is hard,... but the constant connection issues made me throw my controller across the room!

I just decided to set my console to offline mode and say "F--- It!" to trying to play online again.

I don't have these connection issues on PC games. The problem is I can't find an online pc game I like that anyone is playing. I hate MMO's. It needs to be a single/multiplayer combo game. The servers for Arma 2 and 3 mostly require passwords or are empty. I can drop in someone elses game of Dead Island2 and start playing coop but most of them drop out just as soon as I join because they don't wanna play with some random stranger. I played a few hours of Project Zomboid online but the multiplayer scene is too fragmented with every server running a different branch of the beta.

I can't play the pc version of GTA 4 online because I disabled GFWL (and that is about to be abandoned anyway).

The multplayer mod for Just Cause 2 is pretty active and fun,.. but it gets boring quick.

Minecraft online is pointless unless you're playing with friends you have in real life(because other players don't interact with anyone unless they already know them. All you do is the same stuff in singleplayer all by yourself but online. What's the point?

Anyway.. after finally getting the ability to play online after a couple of weeks I realize I wasn't missing anything. Either the games are broken or no one is playing or players don't interact. Online gaming is crap.
Your post reminds me of a PC gamer article I read way back in the 90's that said something along the lines of "online multiplayer is the wave of the future so every developer needs to add mutliplayer options for their games, otherwise they won't sell". I myself have played a few games online but in the end, I always prefered single player because the "online social aspect" was more of a turn off than anything.

Back in early 2000's, I played Command and Conquer: Renegade online and it was a good game. But it kept getting sick of the idiots who were spazzing out telling their team mates what they should and shouldn't be doing. One time, I joined a game late and the refinery was destroyed which meant that the only way to get credits (which were used for better infantry classes and buying vehicles) )was to deal damage to the enemy. I switch my character to a rocket launcher class and start firing at an enemy buidling to rack up some cash. This kid starts raging at me and I told him the refinery is gone and I just joined the game and needed to rack up some cash. Didn't stop him from typing in all caps using a certain f word more often than any other word.

Then there's the sociopaths who enjoy ruining other peoples fun using hacks. It's hard to enjoy a game if your opponent (or team mate) are cheating for whatever reason. I've never used a cheat or hack in any online game I've played because to me, it's just counter productive. But I guess they make other people feel tough.

I do play an MMOFPS and I am fairly good at it. That means I can get hackusated by anyone who gets butthurt when I kill them. I do enjoy the twich gameplay on FPSs and I enjoy the tactics on some of the game modes but man, can the communites be absolute crap. In one game I was playing, there was a certain player I kept killing over and over again. Usually what was happening is I was flanking him and shooting him in the back, or he never checked a corner I was hiding in or he were face to face and he was simply too slow. Didn't stop him from calling me a hacker though. Our team lost the game, but after the game, the guy was laughing at me saying that we lost even though we used hacks.

It can even go so far as to some people going in an all out rage saying they're going to hack my PC, find out where I live and kill my dog or rape my kid (not that I have either mind you but that's not the point) or some other random act of violence. Threatening violence to someone online simply because you played better than they did is beyond absurd.

The connection issues you were having is one thing, but for me one of the biggest turn off for multiplayer is the communities. I know Gog isn't a multiplayer gaming community but I've always found the community here to be very good. Still, I just hope I never see the day a Gog communitiy member threatens violence against me for whatever reason.
Online gaming is crap because it's based on social networking, and people generally don't have the desire or the time to actually work at building the relationships necessary to sustain those networks. That's why this MMO revolution is so weak... it's build on a shoddy framework and laced with apathy, distrust, and greed. Those aren't usually the strong elements you want when building a new technological revolution... or a marketing gimmick.

I play DayZ quite a bit. I go solo, usually end up as a bandit. I've seen some very disheartening behavior from other players, whereas I at least go in it from a solo perspective from the get-go. I don't try and build trust with someone just to shoot them in the back and take all their stuff. Another thing that gets me is how lazy people have become, even in video games. A lot of players spawn in the DayZ map and instantly start demanding that someone come give them a ride to the nearest army base or large town. Really? You can't even run in a video game? How about exploration? The DayZ maps are HUGE! There's tons of places to go and hide, scavenge, or build up as a base. There's so much fun to be had in that world and 90% just sit around on the coast at spawn points, bitching about how no one is coming to fly them to where they want to go. My heart bleeds. Really. Someone get the violin.

I wouldn't go near GTA online with a ten foot pole. Or ten feet of fiber optic cable for that matter. I've got a suggestion for people who are finally fed up with online gaming and the immature brats that inhabit the servers. Go and apply at a daycare center. Get the job and babysit annoying children all day. That's what online gaming is like, only with a daycare center job you'd at least get paid for it.
Reminds me of this thread...

This is the problem with this online gaming insanity in general. Multiplayer gaming is only really fun with people that you actually know, and is best enjoyed in their immediate presence (i.e. local multiplayer). I love playing Mario Kart, Mario Party, Nintendo Land, Sonic and All-Star Racing Transformed with friends locally - it's so much more fun than bantering around with silent unknowns over a network. Indeed, the MP of the vast majority of games with online matchmaking are usually dead within a month or two these days.

I always have to laugh when you get the usual whingers on the Steam forum going on about "why hasn't this got online multiplayer!!!!!ONE111".
I've only played Read Dead Redemption online on the PS3 and the connection was faultless which is impressive as my internet connection is pretty damn slow. So you'd think that they'd get it right for GTA as well.

I was put off RDR online by the incessant abuse and sheer nastiness of other gamers. It may have just been bad luck but I've never played online since.

Well often enough I play with friends over Skype, so I can definitely see where they're coming from
I'd only play with people I know and since none of my buddies really plays video games I don't play online, but I am more into single player anyway as means to appreciate the work of the artists (programmers/designers) in my own pace/way.

Multiplayer is more fun on a shared screen with someone right beside you to start a sudden pillow fight when someone is mean or change to *other things* if it's your partner. ;)
If here should be a social aspect to it, don't let it be a virtual one.

This.
I wish developers included more split screen options, especially for PC games. PC Gamers have friends in real life too.

Yes, after noticing, that even Flatout 2 hasn't got a splitscreen multiplayer while I wanted to play something with my gf a few weeks ago, I got an old Wii, some controllers and a lot of GameCube games for it and integrated it into my appartments audio and visual system. Had a blast with Mario Kart yesterday but wished, I could play my PC-games this way too.

I was through with consoles since N64 but now have gotten back to an old one only for proper multiplayer.
