Bad things about Modern FPS:
- Movement is too slow, in many cases you can't run at the same time as shoot.
- Movement is too weighty and "bumpy" (non-smooth).
- FOV is way too low.
- Indestructible sticky cover.
- Health regen instead of finding health items.
- Limited inventory/can't hold every weapon in the game at same time.

Almost all of that comes from this stupid mentality of trying to make FPS "realistic", movement has to simulate the way a person moves, FOV is low to try and simulate the field of vision of a real person. A real person couldn't carry all those guns at the same time.

But they forget that these are GAMES, games are abstractions, it doesn't matter if something is "realistic", all that matters is that it's fun. And modern shooters aren't fun. There's a reason Doom and build-engine ports are still popular to this day.

ChrisSD: Indeed, I just find discussions like this can get a little bit silly.

"Hey you! Stop having fun with that game! It's objectively bad!!"
"And you there! Why aren't you enjoying this game it's objectively good! I can prove it!"
Well, it seems we actually agree then. :)
I agree with TotalBiscuit. What I hate the most about modern FPS games is that they take themselves too seriously.

Crosmando: Doesn't FC3 have that "sneak up on enemy and push button to do auto-kill" thing? That's almost as bad as indestructible sticky cover
Weird thing to nitpick in a game so varied and awesome.

Not really a nitpick when a shooter is all about killing things, if you can kill an enemy but just coming up behind and pushing a button, it really degenerates the shooting part

Well first off that really ignores the fact that 95% of the time you're dispatching them in other ways. Secondly I don't really care much whether I hit the melee key and whack them or hit the activate key and auto-stab, it's kind of the same thing gameplay wise.

The game has a strong stealth elements and takedowns are a part of that. I am fine with it.

I'd personally add the following complaints to your list:
- omnipresent iron sights which serve absolutely no purpose apart from slowing the gameplay down - the guns in modern shooters are woefully inaccurate, it's pretty much impossible to hit anything more than five metres away unless you stand stil and press that additional, magical "your weapon turns into a sniper rifle" button. I honestly miss the frantic, liberating gunplay Quake games and their contemporaries offered.
- atrocious level design, shamelessly funneling you from point A to point B - there's no middle ground between the scripted spectacle and the (usually monotonous) open world experience.
There are still plenty of great FPS games so I would say while sure many are more linear that doesn't make them boring or bad
And besides we still have plenty of FPS games with big levels (Serious Sam and STALKER for example)

Leroux: When I hear these kind of arguments, I always perceive them as something like: "In our days, we were much tougher than you young whippersnappers today, we didn't have it as easy as you wussies, we still knew what work was!". :P

Well, Serious Sam were games directly modeled upon old-style FPS, which is why they had such a big level design. And STALKER is more of an RPG
I am glad no mentions Arma...
TotalBiscuit certainly has some excellent points. But there are things I like with modern games. In particular I like games that tell their story ala Half-Life 2.
Indeed they have. I remember the video TB did for Rise of The Triad where one of the developers said after Half Life came out everyone tried copying it and it lead to shooters getting to the state they are today. Granted I do like a few linear ones like Fear, but overall modern AAA shooters are just plain sad today.

Roman5: Hard Reset was great, Serious Sam 3 was awesome, FC3: Blood Dragon was a breath of Fresh air, the new Rise of the Triad looks amazing
+1 for this. I liked the first three listed and have RoTT on pre-order already.

HL2 tells a story? Sorry, but after leaving "for an adventure" the game was mostly driving, driving, swimming, more driving and shooting your way through on some stops.

I got bored after few hours of this and never again. But maybe I will go back to HL2 one day...
AFter watching TB's video, i do tend to agree. Its more about graphics/cutscenes these days...or more for aaa ones like cod.
