Is it just me, or was ToEE the last D&D pc game to stay faithful to the pen-and-paper style? Granted, 4E is a huge change from previous versions of tabletop D&D, but new PC games with the D&D name don't seem to attempt to do anything involving the D&D game mechanics. Races, monsters, people & places are covered, but alot of the charm of tabletop D&D is lost to me. I would think 4E would make a great pc game as a turn-based action game, given that 4E attacks are now specific and not just general "I swing my sword" attacks.
I totally agree with you that good DnD games are few and far between.
I think the best ones that captured the desktop experience were the Eye of the Beholder games. All three of those were very good.

Following those, the 2 Ravenloft games and the Menzoberranzan game SSI released were the next best.

The strategy RPGs that SSI released ( where you moved white outline characters around top down basic maps were never that great in my opinion). The aforementioned ( EOB etc )games at least tried to do something with the genere graphically.

The next best DnD "type" games were titles like Lands of Lore, Dungeon master, Captive etc. Follow those up with the licenced ones like Icewinddale, Baldurs gate etc. I personally preferred the " looking out of the screen into the gameworld" perspective of the Beholder series etc

In recent years the DnD style of games has lost its focus and resorted to hack and slash game models, and whilst fun, aren't really DnD in anything similar to the original gameplay.

Frankly. all the Might & Magic titles were more true to the desktop DnD formula than most DnD titles.

Bring back real time movement with turn based combat in the DnD genre please.

lukipela: They cant make money if they only cater to the 45 people in the world that want PnP on the PC.
There is alot more 45 people in the world who prefer turn based combat, Real-time combat was the worst thing to happen to party based rpg's. Single player rpgs and shooters are well suited for spaz based play. There are alot of fine example of this, M&M series comes to mind.

To the OP; Sorry, i didnt mean to highjack you're thread. I totally agree, there hasn't been a decent D&D CRPG in years.

I totally agree with the decline over the years. I disagree that the EOBs were the best however... IMHO the Infinity Engine games were. Apart from that, the point stands! :)
A couple of you touched on my feelings about it. Real-time movement, turn-based combat...yes! Real-time combat being too difficult for party-based games...yes!

I just feel that if its a D&D title, it should resemble D&D more in its gameplay. True, I do agree today's gamers want real-time combat more than turn-based, but a host of previous games (D&D and others) give the option of turn-based combat...I'd think a D&D title, most of all, would offer that.

[edit] Oh, and I love Might & Magic 3-5!
