grviper: Oh, no. When the game introduces holes that drop you file levels deeper or monsters that are immune to weapons and magic... Then it's punishment.
Ouch then i rather stay on floor 1 for a while ;p
Hello,

Demise would be one of the best 3d dungeon crawler when you could directly control your party. Okay i played only to the 5th floor or so, so i am a total newb of the game.

But i did not find a way to actually control the battles in the game. I can chose a spell for spellcasters before a battle and then watch the outcome. Against higher level or large groups of enemies my party gets destroyed before i can react.

There is no story or lore in the game, the quests are go and kill or go and fetch something. You have to grind yourself to death to achieve anything. In the game manual the author gives tips like: To decide when to leave a level and explore a deeper dungeon level you should multiply the dungeon level by 10. So for level 2 you should be level 20, for floor 3 level 30... That is an insane amount of grinding all to level 300. Perhaps just a little too oldschool for me :). And i did play all goldbox games with joy not long ago. You have to invest a huge amount of time in demise ascension to achieve anything. So Demise is not a game but a life's time project you must dedicate to.

Have a nice day.

Actually, the hallmark of modern RPG's are strictly linear plots, they just add-in minor deviation so they can call it a role-playing game, Neverwinter Nights for example is a classic example of what is essentially a single-player fantasy story (and a badly written one at that) disguised as an RPG.

Actual real RPG's give you a sense of freedom, when you play a game feel that "tug" of a plot propelling you along, and you feel you haven't real control of your character, that's when it stops being a true role-playing game. The best RPG's give the audience nothing, if you want to know things about the world you're in, you have to find it yourself, no "chosen one" bullshit, they are brutally difficult and don't cater to casuals.

Demise is quite casual. Provided you maintain level and equipment, you can sit through automated battles and just wander around until you're close to hitting the free XP cap. Take it all in nice measured sessions.

Crosmando: Anyone know if Decklin want to get Ascension up on GamersGate or wherever?
It's planned to be released over at GamersGate and according to Decklin "Approaches are being made to other places"... Who knows, maybe we'll see it here on GoG now that they take in Indie titles once it's all done. ,-)

@Hercufles: Glad you're having fun and do be careful of a certain window if you're still mapping level 1...

Edit: So I actually stopped to think for once and guess that GoG comment I made is just wishful thinking as he'd have to make it DRM-free first and that's not something that's likely to happen in this case. ,-(

Hello,

@Crosmando I like demise, i really like it a lot. But it is too addicting for me. and too time consuming. I just have not the spare time to play this kind of game. This and the inability to directly control my party.

@seraphim : your post made me laugh. I was mapping the dungeon all the way to level 4, wasting a ton of time in correcting my mapping errors, when i finally discovered a certain ingame tool, the automap. I managed to get lost all the time, even with automap. Then i started to memorize the floors. I can easily achieve a zen like state when playing demise. So easily that it started the threaten my relationship. Ups another whole night played, my fault. So no Demise for me any more :).

Have a nice day.

Devil Whiskey is now (and for a week will remain so) quite cheap, since it is part of gamersgate's indiefort bundle. 6 bucks minimum for a bunch of games, among them Devil Whiskey.
