DRM is Gamer's Kryptonite!

Freedom Force Vs. the 3rd Reich, a real-time tactical RPG that pits a pack of quirky superheroes against the nazi supersoldiers, is 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $2.39 for the next 24 hours.

Minuteman can jump like an overpowered cricket and deflect bullets with his psychic force field while smashing the enemies with his powerful punches. Tombstone is the master of electricity and a ghost-whisperer. Quetzalcoatl embodies an ancient vengeful Aztec deity. Bullet can move so fast, that many people believe he can be in several places at a time. Those are only few of many superhuman operatives known as the Freedom Force. Their new, somewhat unexpected mission: to go back in time and stop the nazis from winning the World War II. A task that would've been much easier if the Third Reich didn't have its own super-soldiers.

Freedom Force vs. the 3rd Reich combines RPG character management and development with real-time tactics and stylish comic book-like graphics. It offers many cleverly designed missions which call for skillful use of your characters' unique super-abilities. And, if the original cast of heroes doesn't meet your expectation, you can always create one yourself, giving him or her a unique look, and a set of powers. Finally, make sure to check out the story-driven multi-player scenarios when you finish the single player campaign.

Zip up your costumes, iron your capes, and get ready to kick some Nazi butts in Freedom Force Vs. the 3rd Reich for only $2.39 until Tuesday, April 29, at 9:59 AM GMT.

EXTRA! Flash-competition:
Freedom Force Vs. the 3rd Reich comes with a versatile character creation tool, that let's you design your very own golden age-style comic superhero. We've been thinking about a hero that represents what GOG.com stands for: Guardian of Games, a keeper of the gaming archives, a bringer of joy, and mankind's first line of defense against DRM. So, how should Guardian of Games look like? Show us your custom-made character here, in the forum thread, before the promo ends (use of custom textures allowed!). We'll choose three best entries and award 3 gift codes for $9.99 games to the best, 2 to the second, and 1 to the third-best entry. Start channeling Kirby, Lee, and Kane and--most importantly--have fun!

IronArcturus: Wasn't System Shock 2 in legal limbo at some point, but then somehow GOG got it? I wonder which other games are in limbo that GOG still wants to get.
avatar
MoP: Twas Night Dive that pulled System Shock 2 out of the quagmire.
Curious what's holding off the first FF from coming here, that didn't stop it showing up elsewhere.
Interesting. But is there another GOG forum that lists the games GOG is trying to get but they're in some kind of limbo?

Nah, it's all tightly under wraps so other potentially interested parties don't get any hints. The blues sometimes mention some of the bigger name titles that are completely tied up, here and there. Here's an example with a short list TET gave recently.

You can also check out our community search for game rights thread; folks like tfishell, SCPM, IAmSinistar and others over there doing/that_had_done a lot of legwork might know a thing or two about specific titles.

Thanks for the info! I saw Outlaws listed on there a couple of times. Now that's a game I'd like to see on GOG!

Gnoraks: Btw, I've got a question to the mods:
Do you even watch videos (Like the one I made for you <3)?
Would be pretty bad for me, since I made such a nice GoG, with alot of Character and abilities :)
Sure, why not. We'll only look at the character design, not the presentation, though. Giving some backstory is a nice touch and all, but that wasn't a part of the original compo announcement, so it wouldn't be fair if we did let it influence us much.

Reminder: you've only got about 40 minutes left to post your entries.

chean: Good promo, would be an insta-buy if I didn't already have it on my GOG shelf.

The first Freedom Force is on GamersGate as well, without DRM at that; so... perhaps something has recently changed with regard to the legal situation?

G-Doc: Oh? Well then, I should pass it on to my colleagues at GOG.com Biznes Development! :-)

I remember asking them about FF quite a while ago, and getting the "legal limbo" response.
While we are at it Commandos: Strike Force is also DRM Free on GamersGate right now. How about asking them about that as well? (pretty please?)
This is my hero for the Guardian of Games. Her name is "Bringer of Joy".
I think we should not leave the protection and guarding of games and DRM to someone who is very man-like. The best candidate for this is a gamer character. It should be A GAMER, right?
So here is Sea Urc... ehm.. Bringer of Joy!!
She has played with DRM free games so much that now she has a cybernetic brain.
She plays games everyday in a very disciplined fashion.
She has adapted herself to each genre. You can find all these attributes in the attachment picture :)

Could you please extend the competition duration??

The results are in!

Since there weren't that many entries, I decided to mix things up a little. Everyone who entered receives a gift-code for effort! As for the winners: 3 codes for 1st place and 2 codes BOTH for the 2nd and 3rd.

1st place:
Arthandas, with his imposing GOG-hammer wielding godlike hero. This might not be the most laborious entry, but it's the idea that really counts. We love how bad-ass this version of the Guardian looks. And the hammer is certainly a nice touch. There's nothing like a heavy blunt weapon to show DRM who's boss!

3 gift-codes will be sent via PM.

2nd place:
fronzelneekburm, with his heavily-branded DRM-fighting, cape-wearing avenger!

2 gift-codes will be sent via PM.

3rd place:
DalekMan, with a really nice modern-looking design. It's a nice thought that the Guardian should be tech-savvy.

2 gift-codes will be sent via PM.

Honorable mentions:

XYCat - GoG as a T-Rex?! How cool is that!!!?!!!

Chimerical - nice accessories!

Gnoraks - this version of the Guardian looks like someone fun to hang out with!

Jsmnox - an original design, for sure! Love the ZX Spectrum rainbow ;-)

1 gift code for each of you! Hope I didn't miss anyone?

Congratulations, and thanks for playing :-D
:(
Congratulations for the winners and kudos to GOG/G-Doc for the generousity!

Having toyed around with character creation unsuccessfully I have a lot of respect for those who pulled it off; for me, I've got numerous programs to uninstall and and really awkward x-ed out block graphic in the game.
Thank you thank you! No need to stand up! Oh please, such ovations!
I would like to thank my mom, dad, my best pal Jesus Christ who helped my nonexistent artistic skills and of course G-Doc and the rest of GOG staff :)
Free games! Neato! :D

Kudos to my fellow contestants and congratulations to the gog-staffer who came up with a contest cool enough to keep me from playing Lost Alpha!
Congratulations to the winners, quite a few cool entries. I think my personal favourite would have been Jsmnox, very cool and original design.

Though what I would have loved to see would have been some old dude with a thick, white beard.
It was a funny 'competition' and fun creating a Guardian of Games (Also I did a Steam Villain...)

Thanks for the free game, didnt expect that, tbh <3

Gratz to all the main winners, have fun with the new games :)
Wow, what fun! That was a really neat idea for the GOG folks to do. It's a shame that the talented folks at Freedom Reborn, the home of Freedom Force online, didn't get a chance to try out a few designs, but the GOG community made some really cool designs!

If you enjoy Freedom Force, be sure to check out all of the amazingly cool stuff available for the game, including resources for pretty much every comic book character there ever was, new campaigns, maps, and more!:
