Tallima: I should also mention that the script file I ran to put Steam Big Picture as a log-in entry failed horribly. The script ran, but after it was down and I logged out to log into the Steam-only log-in, the computer told me that the installation went bad and that it was reverting to my previous settings.. I had to restart my computer to log back in.
If steam-login didn't work, you still have the option of trying the method outlined in the other article given previously, which involves using Steam's official packages. I just made a little mistake regarding the latter saying that you don't need to download the files listed there manually since they are in steam repo you already have. I've checked and those files are from steamos, not steam repository, so you either add the former or dl those files manually as advised in the article.

If that doesn't work either, you can always install some lightweight desktop environment yourself, and run it as a session when you want to take the load off your machine. It's nothing complicated, so say if you need pointers.

Tallima: As for 64 bit versions or not, I might be messing something up there. I remember seeing tables for (x86) and AMD(x64). SInce I have a 64-bit Intel Core 2, I picked the x86. I hope I picked right.
Rotorde's excellent answer covered everything. I will just add that 32-bit (x86) Wine is still the preferred way to go for most applications, but it doesn't hurt trying 64-bit (x86-64) wherever you can. Reverting is always easy, especially with POL.
