You were correct! I've been playing this on and off for the most of my life but never knew about that secret, or that button's function.
Now if we only knew what that token does...

I think I just figured out what it does: After picking it up, you can use the second vending maching in that corridor and get a shotgun from it.

In fairness, I'm pretty sure a vending machine that dispenses firearms wouldn't be legally sanctioned (unless, in that game, the NRA runs the government....).
