GameRager: For those who seem to not get the point i've been trying to make for some time now and who keep asking me why I keep posting here...here is one of the main reasons:

I was like some here in the past.....I tried getting stuff changed(like the broken rep system) for YEARS....complaining in the forums, making wishlist voting things, contacting staff, etc......and in all that time I never once made much of a dent in those issues(except maybe rude and rule breaking users being modded).

As such, I have come to the realization that it is mostly a waste of time for the common users like us, and while I still try to affect change for the better on GOG from time to time, i've mostly dropped it as life is short & there are much bigger issues in life(including ones I might actually be able to solve in whole or in part).

And that is one of the reasons I post here....because i've been in the same "shoes" before, and don't want to see people wasting the time they have on movements that are very likely going to achieve little(from gog's end).
Like you said, you've already stated your point at least 100 times now so let those who still want to "waste their time" do what they want. Those you want to "protect" here rather feel "attacked" and "annoyed" by you. If that's what you want - congrats, you've achieved your goal.

People are free to do/say what they want....how are my words stopping them from such(if that is what you're inferring)?

(Also an aside: I don't get why you seem to be equating me posting such with forcing anyone to do anything or me trying to stop anyone from doing anything. People are adults with free will and can post as they please within the framework of the forum guidelines)

Also yes i've repeated a bit, but (possibly like many of the other hangers on) i'm also running out of things on this topic to talk about(and I also think they're good points).

Anyone(of those still hanging around after all this time) who feels such should try to read my posts for proper context and intent, and if something isn't clear they should ask instead of possibly assuming the worst(of what I mean and my intent)....also if someone still wants to be annoyed they should be so at GOG for taking away the DLer in the first place & not me for speaking my mind(albeit a bit repetitively).

----------------------------------------------

Edit: You say to let people say what they want....well then what about me? Shouldn't I be allowed to say what I want as well?

At least I stick around and keep everyone company, and am mostly civil and somewhat supportive of the movement.
(even if I am a bit of a "debbie downer" with how I see this panning out and some of what i've said)

I wonder.....if anyone here will still be pushing for this a year or so from now, still hoping for GOG to say something or do something.

MarkoH01: In case you are using the website here (which I assume you do) I could not recommend this to you high enough. Along with barefoot essentials these two scripts improve the GOG experience at least 150%. They are so great that I cannot imagine using GOG without them. In case you need links, I could post them.

DBDigital: I wouldn't mind seeing links to those. :) Not sure what all they do, but 150% improvement in the GOG experience I am all for. :)

AnimalMother117: Just expressing my own personal annoyance at the downloader being gone and using the browser downloads exclusively being a slight pain. I used Galaxy once or twice and found it obnoxious and it reminded me why I did not like the Steam client. If I ever put it on my system by accident (like the physical copy of the Witcher III) I purge it from the system. I loved the GOG downloader and miss it terribly.
avatar
DBDigital: There are some tools around that help with downloading (not as good as GOG downloader but get the job done). I'm using XDM which plugs into a browser and gives starting/stopping/bandwidth throttling options. Might want to give it a try. Free, open source, and doesn't have the crud that a lot of others I found do (https://sourceforge.net/projects/xdman/)

A thought did recently occur to me, I wonder if GOG would entertain the possiblity of a Galaxy lite client that is 99% downloader? Doesn't seem like that would take much since they have that feature already, just remove the extra. Granted a return of the GOG downloader would be 1000X better (and a lot faster), but at least it (might) do away with largest issues many of us have with the Galaxy client.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm giving it a try now. It's not worked perfectly yet, but it's been useful.

Welcome. :) One big tip to is to add .bin file type to the "browser monitoring" section of the options. And of course add the extension for your browser. Several different browsers are supported including Firefox and Chrome. But if you use the older version (2018), XMD won't install the extensions from itself. You have to go to the Firefox/Chrome/etc website to download the extension from there. I like the 2018 version better myself. For some reason I couldn't get the bandwidth limiting to work with the latest version. A bug he is working on I believe.

Another nice thing I like is I can turn off/shut down XMD when I am not downloading something (it is also handy for grabbing youtube videos for example). So it doesn't take up resources unless I am using it. Some of the downloaders I looked into sit in the background sucking up resources even when you have them "off". Usually that is due to the spyware or other crud that is bundled with it.

To everyone still hanging on.....I admit that my stances are known and see that repeating them all the time isn't helping(and is likely upsetting some).....so for the purposes of promoting a civil thread environment I will be doing my best to avoid the compulsion to post such and will be dropping those aspects of my replies/posts here for the most part(unless someone asks about such or similar) & will try to stick to more positive replies from now on.

Eh, not much else to do...i've said my peace & am otherwise done with that, and this thread(and even the forum) are slowing to a crawl over time....unless maybe y'all got some ideas(of things to do and talk about)?

Hmm...maybe we could all play gin rummy or canasta.

visconteprimus: There is no reason to cut it off.

You know what!?

This so-called-change seems to me GOG is becoming more similar to Steam: no choice left to customers but only unilateral decisions.

You'll see: next step will be keeping only Galaxy to download our titles.
Thanks for starting this thread, I am so glad people are discussing this issue here.
For me it's less about the GOG Downloader and more about the fear of this client taking over all of GOG.
I always try to stick with the mainstream until I am sure I don't like something, and I gave Galaxy an honest shot for months. Unfortunately, using Galaxy makes me feel the same way as I do when I use Steam... "Uncomfortable" is the word I'd use to describe my experience.

Downloading via the browser isn't ideal, but it sure as heck beats using any client! I hate that I can't just play a video game without being forced into some sort of social media network. GOG Galaxy, just like Steam, always promote this really annoying modern mentality of "share everything with your friends, never feel alone!" The game time tracking, your friends list, the achievements, the way you can make posts...

Please GOG Team if you are reading this, GOG offers something that no other gaming-related service does currently: SOLITUDE. I have been buying from GOG since 2010 despite what this account says (had an older one) and I loved that I finally found a quiet corner on the internet where things were just as they were before Steam, YouTube and Twitch blew up. QUIET is the keyword.

I just want to be alone when I play games and play them only for my own enjoyment. I don't want anything between me and the game I am playing. You know that stereotypical scene in some fantasy novel where the old magician reads scrolls and books at candlelight inside a tower in the middle of nowhere? I want that but irl with video games, I just want to play the game and NOTHING ELSE.

I want to own the game I buy (thanks for allowing that!), I want to just be able double-click my desktop shortcut and have the game start immediately without a huge client popping up, I want to play the game without notifications popping up about how I can chat or how I have achieved something in the game, etc. etc. It's like some annoying jackass trying to distract me from playing the game or advertising to me. And GOG Galaxy is only going to get worse (I envision some Twitch integration or some garbage where I can watch twitch streamers play the games I own from within the client, because STEAM did it amirite famalam poggers omegalul whatever?)

Please, no! No more of all this noise, just give me a way to buy the game, give me a way to download the game, and leave me alone. If I want online social interaction, I log into this forum, check out the thread, and leave.

... So yeah, the GOG Downloader would be great. It'd make the quiet way of just downloading the game using a browser much more convenient.... And it'd restore my hope that GOG isn't going down a dark path.

Did you try the download manager(XDM I think it's called) someone linked several posts back? that might work for you as well.

(Info is in posts 690 and 713)

I like some features of such clients sometimes, but I don't think it's needed to have fun and don't use one all the time or even mose of the time.....so I have sort of a so-so/like-dislike relationship with it.

Again, i'd check out the XDM download thing someone posted awhile back...it might help you out(or one of the other browser DL managers) while we wait to see what comes of all this(if anything).

Yep. This is one of the major points: pleasure being on your own.

Alas, seems GOG wants force us (in a not-so-smart way) to acquire a "friendly Steam mind" via Galaxy: more social, more interaction with others, more "friendship" between Players...

A very huge pile of junk!

When I run a videogame, I want stay alone. Period.

On Steam (where I've come back, thanks to GOG's recent behaviour), I've had to set my Profile to the maximum level of privacy.
Here, I thought having found a peaceful oasis: now, I fear not.

Well, as I've just said a lot of pages ago, of great books world is full: time to return to Literature.

Imo both are good to different people. Some like being by themselves and for them that is the best way to play, and for others they like to game with others and for them that is the best way to play.

That said, I think both sides should be allowed to game as they want.

Indeed, the GOG downloader was a great piece of software, better than Galaxy in some regards and it was working for 10 years, which is quite a long time. It's a shame and maybe one day Galaxy won't be optional anymore.

But then I'm so past caring for GOG. It's mostly nostalgic feelings.

Thanks GOG downloader, you worked great.

And you helped me yet again, thank you very much.

I agree, this extension has a lot of useful features such as the video downloads and increasing load speeds. It's also non-intrusive, which is always a big plus for me.
