I'm a Steam user here for a while. I stumbled GOG yesterday and been very curious about it and the games.

After reading the Connect page. I still am not sure of few things, specially on the saving games part.

In Steam I launch the client and have all my games in it, press Play and there I am playing the game. When saved, the game is saved locally in my hard drive and synched with Steam.

How does it work with GOG? Is it the same? GOG games get saved locally in the hard disk?
Assuming yes, then if I want to format one day my computer, all I have to do is to background GOG games folder?

If I get a game in GOG, can I "move" to Steam? Some sort of key I heard? Sorry noob here.

Appreciated and Thank you

GoG is a DRM free game retailer you can either download the installer via the site or via a still in beta
client similar to Steam called Galaxy.

No if you buy a game here you will not be able to move it to Steam.

Think of Steam and GOG as separate stores.

GoG connect is merely a way to get games that come here that are also on steam without paying for them again. but its sporadic and depends on publisher/dev approval.

GOG saves the games on your hard disk. But it is not as easy as backing up your gog games folder for the saves since there is no savegame location for all games. Some games have their saves in one of the user folders from windows and stuff like that. So you'd need to check before formatting where the saves are and make a backup.

No you can't. Games on GOG are games on GOG, there never is a key to redeem it on Steam. Connect is just a kind of promo thing where you can get games you own on Steam for GOG, but it is never the other way around.
I see. That's good to know.

At the present moment, GOG does not have a cloud storage feature deployed, however the GOG Galaxy client will include such a feature at some time in the future, quite possibly later this year but they haven't made any official announcements about it yet. So your save games are only stored on the computer you're playing the game on for the time being.

If you need to format your hard disk, you'll need to back up all of your savegames etc. very carefully first for now.

As moonshineshadow mentioned, you wont have your Steam games available on GOG, nor vice versa. If you buy games on Steam then you own them on Steam and can use Steam client to access them. If you buy games from GOG, then you can use the Galaxy client to access them or you can download them directly through the website via the ACCOUNT -> LIBRARY menu.

The GOG Connect feature allows you to link your GOG account to a single Steam account (which can not later be changed to a different one, so if you do this make sure it is the right account you want permanently associated with GOG). This allows GOG to view your owned games on Steam. From time to time game publishers may decide in conjunction with GOG.com for promotional purposes to give free GOG copies of certain specific games that one owns on Steam for a limited time only just to promote the store and the game. This usually happens during big sales when it is done. Otherwise there are not normally any games offered through the Connect service until the next time it is being used for promotional purposes by publishers.

Connect is used as a limited offer on some games. Right now there are no steam games that you can reclaim here. The advantage of using GOG is that you can download a backup copy of your game, move it to a different HDD, burn it to a DVD etc and even in 20 years that copy of the game will be available to you. You can of course always re-download your games from the site or through the Galaxy client.
Keep in mind that buying a game on GOG doesn't gives you a Steam key. What it gives you is the game in your library and GOG's assurance that the game will work on the advertised operating systems. Unlike Steam, GOG tests the games they release here, so the chances of buying shovelware or a game that's not working are infinitely smaller.
