Star Wars™: Rogue Squadron 3D, an award-winning arcade take on X-Wing action, is available on Windows - for the first time in digital distribution - on GOG.com!

Star Wars™: Rogue Squadron 3D turned out to be a sleeper hit, an enormous one at that. Originally released for Windows and Nintendo 64, it was lauded as an immense technical achievement in terms of graphics and a smooth, responsive gameplay experience, eventually outselling any industry estimates by manyfold. Rogue Squadron forsook the realistic simulator approach of the X-Wing series, opting instead for an accessible, visceral arcade experience. The game offers plenty of bonus goodies for Star Wars™ fans, including re-enactments of the famous Death Star trench run and Battle of Hoth, as well as plenty of good old-fashioned unlocks, including a pilotable Millenium Falcon, AT-ST, and even a 1969 Buick Electra.

Become Skywalker's elite in Star Wars™: Rogue Squadron 3D, a visceral dogfighting experience on Windows - for the first time in digital distribution - on GOG.com!
I cant seem to get my joystick or 360 controller to work. They work fine on the games menu but when I launch the first mission the joystick/controller doesnt work
Thank you GOG, one of my favorite games on the N64, played it for many hours. Couldn't believe it when I saw it on the front page. I love this game!
Mac version please.

DreadMoth: I wrote up a post in an old thread about the game a while ago - it'd be interesting to see how much of that still applies.

Elmofongo: Is this game playable with PS3/360 controller. This game came out on N64 aswell so playing with a Controller works?

DreadMoth: I'm not sure about the GOG version (yet), but when I tried using a PS3 controller with the retail version of the game (using MotionInJoy DS3 Tool) I had to set the game to default joystick controls (it wouldn't let me assign buttons, only axes), then use the DS3 Tool to assign the physical buttons I wanted to the numbered buttons in-game.
This works for me with my 360 controller, it just took me a couple of extra steps.

Turn off compatibility mode then set the controller up using "ROUGE.EXE" under the folder "ROUGE" in the game directory. After you've launched the game hit default in settings when mapping the controller's buttons. Looks like compatibility mode is causing a lot of issues with this release.

Works like a charm, cheers mate!
I just bought this game, and if you ask me, it just seems like another money grab from Disney ( or whoever holds the copyrights to RS3D currently). It doesn't use nGlide or D3DWindower by default, and I'll give a little credit, the game *DOES* seem to play fine without nGlide. Overall, I don't feel it was a waste of money, I supported GOG ad the devs/owners and have a legit copy to boot. But on the flipside of things, noone bothered to patch the GOG version to include support for widescreen resolutions. And the biggest bug (in my view) in the game is *STILL* present, which is that when you press the F key (while flying the X-Wing), sometimes the craft will zoom far off into the distance, making it very difficult to get control of it without switching cockpit views. This happens to me when using nGlide and D3DWindower, I have yet to encounter this bug in the GOG version of the game when I'm not using one of those 2 programs. But that, for me, also means giving up playing the game in my native 1600x900 resolution. I also have yet to encounter the infamous crash at the end of every mission, which happened often on XP for many people. Oh yeah, and no Alt-Tab support either. I mean c'mon, seriously? In an age where people constantly use their PCs for multitasking. The devs should have done more to fix this game up a bit before pushing it to GOG for distribution, surely patching a few minor bugs wouldn't take too much effort, and would show people that they're serious about supporting their game, however old it may be. But no, they just released it with as little effort and patching as possible, because they were in a hurry to make money. My 2 cents.........

The developers (Factor 5) have been shut down, so it would be impossible for them to work on the game.

DarkHeart1: How?
Right click on ROGUE.EXE and in the tab Compatibility uncheck it, if it grey out click on the button at the bottom of that tab to enable changing it.

When I opened Properties, Compatibility Mode was already unchecked. Do I go ahead and check it for "Windows 8"?

Welcome to the forum willou, and goodbye. :D
OK.
Having read all the posts here and spent far too long googling, I've gotten quite annoyed at the game.

I'm running on windows 8.1 and I'm convinced, at this point, that this version of windows is a little more incompatible with Rogue Squadron 3D than others.

Compatibity on the "Rogue Squadron.exe" is forced on (for XP SP3) and can not be turned off. As a result I can't configure a controller (Xbox 360 controller), and trying to use Glide with the came makes it unplayable, preventing the game from even launching and promtping the "reinstall from the CD" error message.

While Glide isn't something I feel is necessary to enjoy the game, playing with a controller is something that is a little more essential.

Having just fixed this problem on my win 8.1 machine, I hope I can help. It may be be necessary to apply a RegEdit fix before this can work.
I went to the installation folder "C:\GOG Games\Star Wars - Rogue Squadron 3D" Copied the "ROGUE" folder in it's entirety (the game is small enough so I don't care about the copies) and pasted the ROGUE folder to "C:\Games" and ran "ROGUE.EXE" from there I could enable the use of a glide wrapper and set the xbox 360 controller as my default controller.
A copy of the RegEdit fix I mentioned earlier. Create a new notepad file paste the text below in it and save as a " .reg " file. For me I could Right click and "Merge" from the menu.

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC\Rogue Squadron\v1.0]
