Or adventure games :P

tfishell: Why not add the intro and outro movies as bonus content, so Win 8/8.1 folks don't have to go snooping through the game files if they don't want to? (Maybe legal issues held this back?)

Still, cool release. :) Glad to see Nordic back and of course looking forward to Titan Quest Gold and Supreme Commander Gold showing up here. (And other highly-desired Nordic games.)
Well, it doesn't really qualify as a bonus since it's actual in-game material and not really all that exciting on its own, imho :)

tfishell: I was just thinking since Win 8/8.1 people can't see the intro/outro movies, perhaps you can make those easily available in some fashion, rather than just letting them know the "movies are available within the game's files."

Obviously it's not a huge deal but I'm thinking of some of the GOG users who really aren't computer-proficient and may never have touched their C drive. *shrug*
All of the movies are in a folder called _MOVIES on Windows 8/8.1, it's readily available in the game's own directory :)

IronArcturus: Is this game similar to Space Empires IV?
Not sure but there is no windowed mode in this oldie, I am afraid.
avatar
Boonatron: Does this game have the patch applied?

What version is it at please?

Thanks.
1.072 :)

0Grapher: Judging from your avatar you are a Linux user.
Have you tried running the game with Wine? Specifically, I'm wondering about the GOG version because on Winehq in can only find information about the original unpatched CD version. :)
I just did this at work on a PC with Ubuntu 14.04.

I grabbed the Wine version that you receive with

sudo apt-get install wine

so for me it was WINE 1.6.

I ran the setup program, got through some of the minor error messages, checked the WINE drive, started up the game in Wine and it seems to work :) All of this is unofficial and YMMV :) Keep in mind that our game is at 1.072 so maybe that had some influence :) Also, since the game is in 640 x 480 by default you will have a window with the game with no full screen I am afraid.
avatar
0Grapher: On Linux and Mac there's Wine which is really similar and allows playing any game in a virtual desktop i.e. in windowed mode. :)
Old games often run a lot better on Wine than on modern Windows. Some games don't run at all, though. :)
avatar
IronArcturus: When I used to run Ubuntu, I used Wine a little bit. But for some games it was difficult to configure. I wonder if the Linux Mint version of Wine runs any better. Does Mint have an alternative to "PulseAudio?"
The ironic thing is that with WINE, you'll get the windowed mode you desire as it defaults to a window :)

avatar
0Grapher: I highly doubt it. As far as I know they are the same.

PlayOnLinux is a front-end for Wine that makes installing games a lot easier and if you're lucky automatic for your game.
It is always a good idea to look at Winehq. https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=1783

If you see a platinum or gold rating for the game you would like to install the game may run even better on Wine than on modern Windows. You can also find installation instructions there.

Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain got a gold rating from one user but the other silver ratings suggest that it may be a bit difficult to install.
The GOG version installed perfectly here :) Again, YMMV and all that :)

avatar
IronArcturus: Yeah, Wine can do a lot of things DOSBox can do. That's why I wish Win95/98 could be open sourced so there could be a "WinBox." :P

It's too bad there isn't a Linux version of this game. MobyGames says there was only a Windows and Mac version.
If I can run it in Wine, then you can too :)

Here's the quick-and-dirty version:

IN terminal type:

wine setup_pax_imperia_blablabla.exe

Do the usual routine that you would do once the install window comes up for the game.

Install it, click through some error messages that show up (don't worry they are harmless).

Go to your .wine folder, find the C:\ or whatever letter you used, drive, find the game's executable, and then right click on it and select "Run this using Wine's Window Program Loader" and you're done :)
avatar
0Grapher: Thank you. :)
The game might run even better with a newer version of Wine so check your distro's package manager for the latest version :)

gamefood: (Already posted mistakingly in the german thread by gog...)

Eminent Domain as video game? I only know and own a card board game with same name, which is, btw, much fun to play!
Is this a accident or have they both something to do with each other? Cardboard game inspired by the video game or vice versa?

Btw & fully off-topic: Is this an existing word in the english language: "Carport" ???

slackhacker: I played this a bit when it was new, still have the disc. I had much better luck with the 1.06 patch than the 1.072 patch. YMMV.

IIRC, the 1.072 patch was a beta patch, and only one programmer was working on it. The changelog even states that it was only "unofficially officially supported"; it contained numerous gameplay balancing changes and was fun to play, but I encountered a bug once where a space battle occurred but neither side attacked each other, they just sat motionless. I wound up just 'fleeing' that battle. I think the one programmer hinted on the official forums that they were working on a newer patch, but then silence - I assume sales weren't enough to justify continuing support.

This was a LOOOONG time ago, but this is as best as I can remember it. I don't recall very many crash-to-desktop bugs, but I remember that **for me**, the 1.06 patch was more stable, and I remember being slightly ticked that it became so hard to find after the 1.072 beta patch came out.

If 1.072 beta was my only choice, I still would have enjoyed the game. I usually play a custom race. Sometimes I get tired of staring at progress bars and waiting, but the game is still fun. Wishlisted just on principal. Still play it occasionally.

From the changelog for the 1.072 beta patch: >snip<

(edited: changed 'don't remember any crash to desktop' to 'don't remember very many'; added enjoyment comment)
We had better luck with the 1.072 patch than with the 1.06 patch on all of our systems :) In fact, it's thanks to the 1.072 patch that we can have working multiplayer in the game :)

dakenho: is there any chance of getting the multiplayer save patch to work with this?
Well, we have the game patched to version 1.072. As for any other patches, some more details would be helpful :)
