Well, I wouldn't call this "old-school"...

Well, the original gamebooks started in 1995. I guess it depends on how close this game follows the original formula.
Looks interesting.
Reminds me of Steve Jackson's Sorcery games... and like the art style; some of those screen shots are gorgeous!

Will definitely pick this up (in time)...

... still, tempted to jump the gun after reading some reviews...

kai2: Steve Jackson's Sorcery
Speaking of:

Sorcery! Parts 1 and 2
Sorcery! Part 3
Sorcery! Part 4
Sorcery!
Steve Jackson's Sorcery! - The Complete Collection
Battlefield fits the palm of my hand, per trailer. What's the challenge?
You can grab the books if you feel like some good old paper https://fabledlands.blogspot.com/
They also are responsible for several other game book series etc
Looks interesting, I see "free demo", I'm in.
Something to keep in mind: This contains the central northern continent of the Fabled Land series - so The War-Torn Kingdom, Cities of Gold and Glory, The Plains of Howling Darkness, and The Court of Hidden Faces. There are plans to release the remaining two books from the original series as DLC - Over the Blood Dark Sea and Lords of the Rising Sun.

If this does well enough then we might even see the new book The Serpent King’s Domain.

So far I’m having a blast reliving the gamebooks from childhood. I’m looking forward to more books being added!
For those who are playing (or have played) the game...

... are there any random events?

I'm hearing that a 2nd playthrough is really hobbled by a lack of randomness.

I can certainly live with a game lacking randomness, but if I'm limited to one unique playthrough, that does somewhat change what I'm willing to pay for the experience.

Minimum system requirements are 'Windows XP SP2+'

That's pretty old school...

Well, each area you got to that has random encounters rolls some die/dice and usually has three events - the one picked depends on the roll. There is a lot of randomness in this game as well as ways to mitigate them. But the events themselves are set - once you've seen them all that's pretty much it. This is pretty much a choose your own adventure book from the 90s. The only thing different is the combat which is far more tactical and interesting.

That said there is a surprising amount of things to do in this game. It's very easy to lose a lot of time just exploring.

Many thanks. I really appreciate your response!

Hearing that the entire experience is rather large certainly helps to justify the price. ;)

With Lone Wolf (hear that GOG? Lone Wolf!!!) or a Steve Jackson game I'd jump at it due to nostalgia, but unfortunately I have no history with Fabled Lands.

If I might ask one last thing...

... do you have an idea how long the game is?

I checked the How Long to Beat site and no one has input that info. yet.
