Underwater wonders to wander on your own terms.

Aquaria, a metroidvania underwater adventure, is available now on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% launch discount.

We hardly think about it daily, but the mysteries of the deep sea right beneath our feet remain just as alien to us as the farthest reaches of our solar system. And where the unknown begins, our imagination starts to wander, and the world of Aquaria begin to fascinate.
Aquaria is a game about exploring both the deepest, darkest recesses of the sea and the sunlit expanses of underwater havens. Equal parts game and audio-visual experience, it's a critically acclaimed adventure that's out to challenge, delight you with a beautiful wide world to explore, and treat you with respect by letting you do so on your own terms. Aside from gamers' hearts, Aquaria stole the show during the prestigious 2007 Independent Games Festival where it was awarded first place for Excellence in Audio, Excellence in Visual Art, Design Innovation as well as the big grand prize as best of show. As one most acclaimed indie productions in recent years, there's no better place for Aquaria than a digital shelf on GOG.com.

Experience an underwater metroidvania with Aquaria, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. You can take advantage of the 50% launch discount for the first week, until Tuesday, August 11, 12:59 PM GMT.
Never heard of this before. Still, it looks gorgeous and the price is right. Bought!

Nesoo: The short version is that it's a platformer that involves lots of exploration with upgrades that improve combat abilities and/or allow further exploration.

eiii: Thanks! I was afraid that some kind of platformer is hidden behind the "Metroidvania". Tagging it as platformer would have made it easier for me. :P
This wouldn't really qualify as platformer though, since it doesn't feature the typical elements of the genre, due to its underwater setting. But it's true, most Metroidvanias tend to be 2D platformers.
avatar
eiii: Unfortunately it's probably not my kind of a game, although I don't completely understand what that "Metroidvania" means as I don't know neither the Metroid nor the Castlevania games. The German "translation" also isn't very helpful.
I never played Metroid and Castelvaine either, but I've heard Metroidvania simply means action / platformer / sidescroller with huge levels. May be it also involves certain style, but I can't define it.

UPDATE: this can help somewhat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metroidvania

HiPhish: How many hours of buildup does it need? I'm sure I had played it for at least two hours before giving up. It's not like I can't hold my attention for more than five minutes, I have played slow games before, like turn-based strategy games, but even they get going after a short while.
Well, I'm downloading it now, so I'll let you know if it ever picks up. However, even if it puts me into a semi-comatose state of relaxation and/or boredom, I won't feel like I wasted my money.

I need a bit of nothing happening while looking at pretty pictures for a while.

Nesoo: IIRC, dolphins have a prehensile penis (they can control it like a limb). I dunno if that makes it better or worse, though. ;-)
I vaguely remember reading that male dolphins also have very strong ejaculations. Strong enough that Samus probably shouldn't have sex with Ecco, unless she has a few filled up reserve energy tanks ready, in case of emergency.

This also has to be one of the weirdest thread derails in the history of the GOG forum. ( And that's quite an achievement. )

I'd like to see the developer's reaction, if they check the release thread. :D

Nesoo: Been waiting for this one for quite a while... and at $5, I might have to revisit my budget to make room for it!

fortune_p_dawg: Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan's war against exercise stings the eyeballs. Lol!
avatar
Nesoo: Really? You see a video with people having fun, and your first reaction is to fat shame? You must be a joy to be around IRL.

avatar
CharlesGrey: ( Well, except for that part where Samus Aran has sex with a dolphin. I'm still trying to decide whether that's a good or bad mental picture. )

Yes really.

I am a joy to be around.

Me, my godlike physique, my giant penis, my mountain of cash, and my Lambo are all the most fun people in neighborhood.
Hmm... I'll probably buy this .

Unless that penis is prehensile...

Yes.

Buy Aquaria!
Already have it, but I'll get it here as well :)

Makes it even more fun. My handshake is penarific.
Great to see this finally on GOG. If I hadn't already used my money on Cosmonautica, I'd be grabbing this one up (even though I already have it on Humble). Wishlisted for now.
*reads posts about dolphins' sexual functions/reproduction* Ummm. Okay then.

Took its sweet time getting here. Still, I may pick it up again - I can't believe the original Mac version on Ambrosia's site still goes for $30; also looks like they're not in the games biz much anymore, which isn't all that surprising. Anyway, I'll just wait and see what else is scheduled for release this week.

Hell, Escape Velocity is still $20 and EV:Override is $25 and neither is usable on many machines still in active use today. Of course, they also host free total conversions of both which you can use in EV: Nova, so that's effectively the full series for $30.
I just finished this a month or so ago (got from the humble store as part of some bundle ages ago).

Pretty fun little game. Well, 18 hours or so isn't exactly little (and I didn't get all the collectibles).

It was kinda difficult at a few spots (as in I had to use a guide to figure out exactly how to do certain puzzle spots/boss fights), but then again this is probably the only metroidvania type game I've ever played (except the original Castlevania which I never finished).

Definetly worth $5 (and I'm cheap).
