The top bar says I have 1 new message, but I can't find the darn thing. When I click it, it takes me to a conversation that occurred over a month ago. So how do I find it and/or make the message go away?

Scroll all the way through the list to the left - chat is not chronologically ordered sadly.

Edit: and keep your eye our for a grey square with a "1" in it. if theres nothing there, maybe try opening chat with whomever you last spoke and see.

Make sure you don't have a game that's just updated, the account gets confused for me often.

I often get notifications for messages I send. It's a rather common bug, see the related discussion starting here.

I haven't sent anything in months either. I only use it when someone messages me first.

Usually it's that someone found a 6 months old post on the trading thread (that I can't find myself) and decides to pester me about it.

its just a phantom notification then.

...that sounds like a really low par sub-title for a sequel.

i have the same bug since months....

last support answer wasn't encouraging :

basically the bug is known (i was the first aparentlly to report it) , and gog will fix it when "times allows" -> you can make your own interpretation with the quoted words..... In other words the support told me to live with.

Honestly the forum sucks : i rarelly use those terms but that the sad reality.
