I love \Metallica/ so much. It is difficult to pick a favourite album, but I seem to cherish the Load/Reload these days the most. Of course And Justice For All with the title track is also a hammer, song like Call of Ktulu (masterpiece), Orion (oh my god), Whenever I May Roam, wonderful ballads... These guys will never bore me.

Could never get into Slayer - their sound just didn't appeal to me.

I've only listened to a handful of Anthrax songs, so haven't formed a concluding opinion on them.

But honestly, we all know the real debate is Megadeth vs. Metallica and, IMO, Metallica wins hands-down. While I can appreciate Megadeth's sound and the technicality behind their play (they have the better musicians, excluding vocals), Metallica have the much more developed and appealing sound. While I'm not always happy with what they've done, I can still find tracks on every album that I enjoy and could easily spend a day listening to them, regardless of the mood I'm in.

Well Metallica does have a more accessible history I mean they are more well documented than Megadeth in some cases.

And the band starting from Kill Em' All to Black Album was quite the Metal Journay from playing in clubhouses to whole Arenas.
Too lazy to go browsing IMs, but one of the lads in our web development team showed me some of what he'd class as their better stuff before, and it didn't catch me enough to remember it. Prior to that, I'd heard the song "What Doesn't Die"on a Nuclear Blast compiliation album, which really caught my ear :D

To go off on a point - I think looking at Metallica, you can see what happens with a lot of metal bands on how they go "Mainstream".

Mostly how the song starts and ends with that ballady part. I mean all I can hear is Michael shouting "HEE HEE!!"

darthspudius: Actually that is what initially turned me on to the band. One thing I like about Metallica and Iron Maiden. Great when you're a kid but they direct you to the better stuff. I'v found stuff like Helloween, Manowar, Mercyful Fate, W.A.S.P. etc thanks to these guys.

vanchann: I like "Countdown to Extinction" and "Cryptic Writings" too. "Youthanasia" is chronologically in the middle and combines the sound of both.

Really interesting classification!

So, Nightwish is not a Finnish Death Metal band from Italy... :-)
I love (ex-Nightwish) Tarja's voice by the way.

darthspudius: Right on! Nightwish is a great band, loved Dark Passion Play and Imaginaerium. Didn't quite get into Endless Forms Most Beautiful though, a bit too pretentious for my cup of tea. Can't believe it's been nearly 15 yrs since I first bootlegged their albums (weren't available in the UK at the time). Great live band too. Shame Annette went the way she did, she was fantastic live before her mental breakdown.

Emob78: No band really ever survives a lead singer change. You can change bassists or drummers all day long, hardly anyone cares. You replace the throat mechanic, everyone does. The Misfits were always best with Danzig, Van Halen was always best with Dave, Nightwish was always best with Tarja. You can change the beat, you can't change the heart.
AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains all survived after lead singer changes.

Randalator: I see your list and raise you an Arch Enemy. Not only did they replace their lead singer but they also went from male (Johan Liiva) to female (Angela Gossow) despite keeping the style of the vocals (growl). Their popularity went through the roof after the change...
Must give them a listen - any suggestion to try, and avoid?

Emob78: Apples and oranges. Coke and Pepsi. Scott and Johnson. Bon Scott will always be the greater mic man, IMO. And don't even mention David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. Not even in the same universe.
That wasn't your point. You wrote "No band really ever survives a lead singer change". Regardless of your opinion on the music of the band, the fact is they continued on after making the change and were still successful.
