Most Microsoft games have DRM. Last time I looked, Age of Empires 2 HD was released on Steam with CEG whilst Age of Empires 1 "Definitive Edition" on the MS store had "Arxan" (an "anti-tamper" technology which works like Denuvo). According to the below list, Arxan DRM seems to be popular with XBox Game Studios and other games that use it include Crackdown 3, Forza Horizon 3, Forza Motorsport 7, Gears of War 4 and State of Decay 2.

Personally I'm glad I grabbed the Age of Empires Collectors Edition (the last blue colored DVD-ROM release under the Ubisoft label as opposed to the earlier CD-ROM ones) that came with both AoE 1-2 + expansions DRM-Free and the SecuROM pre-patched out. It could be upgraded with uPatch / UserPatch (that adds 99% of what's "HD" (bug fixes, widescreen support, higher unit counts for newer CPU's, etc) and had even better AI than the new "Definitives". That would have been the perfect edition for GOG, but of course the time-frame for that is probably over and if MS ever were to come to GOG now, it would probably only be the expensive "Definitive" versions (that exist as endless 2-3 year re-releases solely for the purpose of maintaining $30-$40 prices for decade old games Skyrim style...)

Just out of curiosity, why the hell was that edition released by Ubisoft anyway? I have it too and always wondered how Ubisoft even got their name on it. Why would Microsoft allow that?

Ubisoft don't own the rights, I think it's simply Microsoft using some temporary sub-division of Ubisoft that deals with physical distribution (maybe MS simply paid them to handle physical distribution logistics). Here's what the cover of it looks like. I own it and can personally confirm that both AoE 1 + 2 Collectors Edition DVD-ROM is DRM-Free, has had all earlier disk-checks removed and runs without needing the disc inserted (also confirmed by PCGamingWiki). So if you want AoE 1-2 and are happy to use uPatch (for 1) and userPatch (for 2) to add widescreen, W10 compatibility, etc, that's honestly as good as you'll ever get to seeing a DRM-Free version of the original games. The newer "HD" and "Definitive" re-releases on Steam & MS Store are all DRM'd.

I would love to have the Age of Empires series and Age of Mythology DRM-free on GOG. And of course, eventually AOE 4, if it ever goes beyond the announcement trailer. Unlikely, with Microsoft promoting their own store, but we have seen "miracles" before.

It really is a shame that GOG still doesn't have any MS games on here. There were so many classics like...

Urban Assault

I just want age of series to come here and maybe the flight sim stuff but mainly age of. Crossing fingers and hoping that the GOG and Microsoft thing that happened earlier this year allows there games to come here overtime.
