Nirth: I actually wouldn't mind a DRM free MMO as I hate the rules in regular ones, they are always so static and rigid.
Mmmm.... Makes me think of Pathfinder and their Pathfinder Society. There's so many rules they end up being super strict with or outlawing to make everything more fair and across the board, one of them being the Max of level 10, no item creation feats, average hitpoints rather than rolling, point buy, etc. It ensures everyone gets the same playing field, but at the same time it removes something that was special about it. Of course the Pathfinder MMO is suppose to be up in 2016 for the public. Trilarion: One could still name it anti-cheat system but I think it would not be seen as DRM because there is no external control, nothing is taken away from the player, it's just that other players can only be found by submitting to their current world view.
I would take the same approach as Zy-El. He realized cheating would happen, and although not encouraged it's not discouraged either. Someone then showed how they took the starting value of their character's gear and using the shared inventory, restarted characters and grew the stash and money value of the items until he could get advanced and elite gear, all with 0 experience. One of the beta testers and long time players than analyzed what he was doing and said he could probably get that gear 5x faster just by playing... plus he still didn't really have any levels to back his gear up... or way-points or anything else.
One of the largest anti-cheats used in Zy-El, was just making it incompatible with character editors, and the sheer size of it. I ended up hacking my own character after getting past the CRC check, but only to reset my skill points so I could redistribute them, then realizing I am going to be clicking some 800+ times to distribute points in a more optimal way lost a little of it's appeal...
Honestly, cheating is rather stupid. If it takes away the fun, doesn't let you experience the growth of the character's strength more gradually, or give you any type of challenge, you're going to lose interest in it quickly.
