Shmacky-McNuts: Also, DONT!! I repeat DO NOT buy a prepaid credit or gift <snip> those cards are 100% invalid outside USA.
rtcvb32: Interesting, this i didn't know. Though I've never bought one and it probably mentions this on the back with the agreement when purchasing said card (
which is unlikely to be read because of microscopic print, and legalese).
And when you think about it, gift cards are generally for family/friends and it assumes you're in the US.
GameBuyer01: so how do I purchase a coupon for the amount that he can redeem for the games?
rtcvb32: Aside from putting money in a wallet, and the unlikeliness of being able to transfer between people's accounts with the wallet funds (
and GoG isn't QUITE big enough to have gift cards made with a one-time code to redeem funds...) the next up may be gifting money to their paypal. GoG accepts Paypal (
last i checked), or if you have someone you can trust you could send them the money and then have your son PM/DM them with the game they want and they'd use said funds and send them the code, as I'm thinking about it; though that could have it's own issues.
More detail, because you are polite and may be interested:
In the US, the banks are not always "banks". Like PayPal using magical wording to curtail the law regarding banking. But thats a different topic. Point is with every card in the US, sold in chain stores, those cards often explicitly state it is for within US border. While other cards may not, depending on branding, they are the same. So all those Visa, AMEX etc. will not function online if the bank or destination of the money is outside the USA.
Now for the annoying "technically they can" part of the story. You usually have the option to use those same cards outside the USA, with a huge caveat. Which is, you abide by their rules and sell your soul....maybe not that far, but it seems bad either way. No, you have to abide by their rules and supply a social security number linked to the user(fat chance thats not going to be used for illegal who knows what), and you have to also direct a live/active bank account to them as well and then hope nothing bad happens. Which is.....yeah. Good luck with that >_>
The companies that make the cards are pretty shady to be honest and you would have to jump through hoops and still hope it all goes well for the card to be used internationally AND they still don't let you use THAT gift card, they in fact send you a legit card in the mail over several weeks. Which really defeats the point of cash to digital instant credit. Also defeats the point of putting a credit card online, when yes. That is precisely what that would be.
PaysafeCard being a major pain in the butt is the only cash to digital credit I am aware of in the USA. But they provide zero help with how to get the service. Seriously I took a month of back and forth with PSC and they had no f'n clue how to use their own service. I had to blindly fumble through the process. But it does work and if anyone wants to know more about how to use it, just ask me.
The major problem is not the cards not ABLE to function, but the fact that GOG has zero interest moving their banking within the USA. Probably for tax reasons. The other reasons are perhaps the fingers in their pie taking out to much money as a "service", dipping into direct profit. Which makes sense for a small company.
