Sachys: IceWM sounds promising, but im not sure what you mean by "mainline"
Mainline
Mainline tree is maintained by Linus Torvalds. It's the tree where all new features are introduced and where all the exciting new development happens. New mainline kernels are released every 2-3 months.

I mean instead of being a distro hipster, pick something that's actually known, like Fedora, Debian, or others, and don't pick from a branch. So that invalidates things like Ubuntu or Mint.

seems they require far more than the specs I linked (and thanks gog for not giving me a notification on this!).
this is the entire reason im looking at more specialist distros / versions.

The specs specified are probably relevant only to Gnome 3, which is a famously bloated hog.

My current WM is only using 12 MB of Ram and there's NetInstall downloads if you'd prefer to pick & choose.
