¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I am not one for game pads but I think one is a must for this game.
You can also rebind all the controller buttons with the in-game menu, shown above by Cyraxpt, just select gamepad/controller (I forget the exact wording used) in the previous menu. The only tricky bit I had is you have to figure out with trial-and-error which is the "confirm" key on the controller first, and while in the process of rebinding all the buttons the "confirm" and "back" actions sometimes move around to different buttons. But after you're done rebinding everything, the "confirm" key will be the same as the "attack" button and "back" will be whatever you binded it too.
Controls are standard:

WASD for movement.

UP key for normal attack/opening stuff-menus at vendors. LEFT key for special attack.

That's all.

The only issue is, especially in older Hammerwatch versions like outdated Linux version 1.23 offered by gog you have to hit the keys constantly to attack enemies. That though has been fixed in version 1.3 and 1.3.1 that are not available on gog for Linux. But version 1.3 is available for Windows.

Well, the "constant hit key" thing is still in the Windows version.
