It's very possible that I'm not fully understanding the nature of GOG Galaxy, but it won't help me to run games, cross-OS, will it? In other words, I'm running OSX (Mac) and would love to play anything from the Heroes of Might and Magic series (which appears to be Windows only). GOG Galaxy won't rescue me from my Mac, will it?

To answer your question, Galaxy is only an installation client and provides no emulation/cross compatibility that is not supported for a game. So unless a game natively supports Mac, and cross compatibility is offered by GoG on certain games, you can't run Windows-only games on Mac.There are Windows emulators available that allow you to play games on Mac, but they usually will take a performance hit compared to being run on a native OS.
