Try the DRM-free online gaming platform.

GOG Galaxy: our truly gamer-friendly, DRM-free online gaming platform. As we shared our vision with the world, we promised auto-patching, social functionality like chat, friends lists, and achievements. We promised our own multiplayer support and cross-play with Steam. Most importantly, we promised truly optional.

Today we deliver.
The GOG Galaxy client enters beta, open to anyone, with the most important functionality ready to try, test, enjoy (and break) at your leisure. We're proud to have gotten this far, and we know that we couldn't have done it without you all - that's everyone who spent months in alpha testing, that's those of you who talked to us about your needs and expectations, and it's every single one of you that has supported us since ever. So thanks, GOG Galaxy is for you!

With the GOG Galaxy Beta, you can install your games in one click and keep them up to date automatically, the beta currently supports this feature in all but a couple of titles available here. You can also perform backups easily by downloading a standalone installer through GOG Galaxy. The beta features a friends list, game time tracking, achievements, and chat. You can now talk to each other, connect with your group of friends, and see what everyone is playing. You can also try out our online multiplayer & matchmaking solution that, in select titles, includes cross-play: platform-independent multiplayer between gamers on GOG.com and Steam. If you download a patch that breaks something or if you just change your mind, the app will soon feature a unique rollback option to restore a previous version of your game.

Best of all, GOG Galaxy is optional. If you don't want to use any additional software, your experience with us won't change at all. If you only want to take advantage of select conveniences, you can toggle them on and off. It's all totally up to you.

You can sign up for the GOG Galaxy Beta and find out more on gog.com/galaxy, where we tell you about the features and answer many of the questions you may have. We'll be watching the forums carefully, so feel free to leave a comment if there is anything else that you'd like to know!

YrdenNerf: Would we be able to disable game-time tracking ? I never understood this feature on steam, if i want to be monitored i'll call the NSA
In the FAQ and also in posts here, they were always saying that features would all be optional and can be turned off. So I think it will be implemented in one of the next versions.
13. Is GOG Galaxy truly optional?
GOG Galaxy is fully optional because you don’t need it to play games on GOG.com. If you want to, you can simply download your game via your browser, install it manually, and launch it offline, just like we've always done it on GOG.com. If you decide to use GOG Galaxy for some aspects of the convenience, you can still switch to offline mode at whim and play your games. Optional also means that all features in GOG Galaxy can be turned off. Not a fan of achievements or auto-updates? No problem, they're extras.
Mac user here; some of my games that are compatible with mac os does not show when you choose to only show mac games. In my case this applies to Moo and Moo 2.
I usually don't touch anything that isn't v1.0, but I guess I'll give this GG Beta a go over the weekend when I'll have enough time to tinker around it.
I was in a discussion about GOG Galaxy elsewhere, then realised it would be more relevant if I copied some of it to GOG's forum. As long as it is always optional then I suppose it will offer the best of both worlds, but I can't see that I'll ever use this. I really like browsing my library then just downloading the .exe to my desktop to install (or save for later). But then again, I am not the target for this kind of thing.

– Auto-patching (irrelevant to me – I download and install a game, play it until I am bored or it is complete, then uninstall it)
– Friends (no, I use email and Facebook for that. I don't even have any friends in my Steam client).
– Chat (see above)
– Stats (I'm only interested in ones within the game)
– Achievements (hate these, turned off in Steam)
– Matchmaking (I generally only play multiplayer games either locally or via LAN)

I imagine that for people who do like the features above this optional tool could be something to make GOG more attractive to them though.

In another thread I was asked why I hate achievements. The reasons I gave were: they just seem extraneous to the game itself. If I play Heroes of Might and Magic 2 the achievement is to win the mission/campaign (and have fun doing so). External things like "collect 100 wood" don't add to the fun or central goal, they're just boring distractions. To me, if a game is fun to play, explore, experience, then you don’t need external reinforcement (which is what achievements remind me of, like those "Very good!" stickers and stamps that got put after our work at junior school). And if the game isn't fun to play, explore, experience, then it isn't worth my time. Sometimes when I'm playing round I do create my own extra goals, but that's choice, part of playing, going with my whims. I don't need anyone else to tell me to do that. In fact, it would take some of the fun away.

I vaguely remember being really immersed in games sometimes on Steam, and suddenly there'd be some silly popup, "Iron Award – You Saved 10 Bullets!" or somesuch, totally ruining the experience. Imagine being at the cinema, during a tense scene, and little popups in the corner kept reminding you to buy popcorn in the break, or saying you were doing well for concentrating for that long. Immersion-breaking, distracting, and vaguely patronising. I suppose those three things sum up how I feel about "achievements".

I should add that I have come to realise that some people like them, that's fine. I am not _against_ them if they add to other people's enjoyment. I just think they should be optional – some setting you click that lets you always see them or never see them. That way everybody's happy. The problem right now is that many systems (such as Steam) don't give you the choice, and that leads to debates and polarisation, but there's no reason why everyone can't be happy.

I was also asked about my multiplayer gaming habits and LAN, why I do it that way (rather than via Steam etc). It's because I only play games with one or two friends or family and I think only one of them uses Steam. I like to know the people I'm playing with, so we can chat and joke around while playing, as with a boardgame, and maybe talk about it afterwards. The main games I played via LAN (or LAN over Internet): Aliens vs Predator (1); Earth 2150; HOMM2 and 3; Isle of the Four Winds; (maybe others). Loads of local multiplayer, usually with one of my nephews. I will try a Lego game with them next. I have tried other multiplayer games, played with strangers, but the experience has varied on a scale between bland and irritating.

Just my thoughts - not against GOG Galaxy, but I can't see me using it. Not an issue if it will always be optional.

I'm already in love with Galaxy, because it's not a drm. Also, all them shit like achievements and tracking is optional.

I guess I like to know how much time I waste on video games, but Steam drives a hard bargain for that (it fucks you).

Am I missing something, or Galaxy client does not have the option to manually update your games without downloading stand alone patches?
Im still looking at the HUD, maybe i will try the download and save in hard drive function, but for now i like it. Only the friend system i dont like, but Im sure it will improve a lot.

Galaxy is in developmental beta test (not a demo of it's final capabilities), and many of its features including updating are incomplete currently, however as they continue enhancing the features and implementing the rest of the features the client and services will become more complete over time.

Well I know how beta works ;) I am just wondering if I have missed some submenu or this feature is not implemented yet.
Has the beta been sent to me yet? I'm still waiting to try out GOG Galaxy.
Before I start pestering Support:

If you've applied for Galaxy Beta, you then have to wait for an email titled "GOG Galaxy Beta invitation". This has the key for Galaxy, which can be redeemed in the same way as a game. FYI I applied yesterday for the Beta and the above email has just arrived, so don't worry if yours hasn't.

Which left? Your's or mine?
I guess you mean the place where installed games shows up.
