Try the DRM-free online gaming platform.

GOG Galaxy: our truly gamer-friendly, DRM-free online gaming platform. As we shared our vision with the world, we promised auto-patching, social functionality like chat, friends lists, and achievements. We promised our own multiplayer support and cross-play with Steam. Most importantly, we promised truly optional.

Today we deliver.
The GOG Galaxy client enters beta, open to anyone, with the most important functionality ready to try, test, enjoy (and break) at your leisure. We're proud to have gotten this far, and we know that we couldn't have done it without you all - that's everyone who spent months in alpha testing, that's those of you who talked to us about your needs and expectations, and it's every single one of you that has supported us since ever. So thanks, GOG Galaxy is for you!

With the GOG Galaxy Beta, you can install your games in one click and keep them up to date automatically, the beta currently supports this feature in all but a couple of titles available here. You can also perform backups easily by downloading a standalone installer through GOG Galaxy. The beta features a friends list, game time tracking, achievements, and chat. You can now talk to each other, connect with your group of friends, and see what everyone is playing. You can also try out our online multiplayer & matchmaking solution that, in select titles, includes cross-play: platform-independent multiplayer between gamers on GOG.com and Steam. If you download a patch that breaks something or if you just change your mind, the app will soon feature a unique rollback option to restore a previous version of your game.

Best of all, GOG Galaxy is optional. If you don't want to use any additional software, your experience with us won't change at all. If you only want to take advantage of select conveniences, you can toggle them on and off. It's all totally up to you.

You can sign up for the GOG Galaxy Beta and find out more on gog.com/galaxy, where we tell you about the features and answer many of the questions you may have. We'll be watching the forums carefully, so feel free to leave a comment if there is anything else that you'd like to know!

lostealth24: Well to answer you guys, the game isnt in my library. And i know i was invited to alpha because i got the predator vs alien game for it. But still nothing. And i got the Get It Now email.
avatar
moonshineshadow: Just because you got the Alien vs Predator game, does not mean you were invited for alpha testing. That was a seperate thing to test multiplayer functions with a small integrated client version into the game.
And the "Get now" email is just the news email, you need to sign up here on the page and wait for an actual invitation. Which will probably not turn up before tomorrow or even later.
In fact, they recently DID send out e-mails to owners of the handful of titles which used the "Galaxy-lite" updater/multiplayer/launcher application (in my case, my ownership of the Rise of the Triad remake triggered my receiving that e-mail). Unfortunately, I got this message just a few days ago. Not sure why they bothered sending out invitations for the alpha stage when the beta was apparently so close, but whatever.
hi, signed up for the beta a few hours ago and still haven't received my email, is this normal or have I hit a bug

cogadh: How? I've only installed a couple of games through Galaxy and I don't see any way to run the install manually and even though I set the download directory to the same one the old downloader used, there is nothing in there from my Galaxy installs.
avatar
JudasIscariot: OK, you see where the blue install button is? If you click on the gray button next to it and go to extras, you'll see your bonuses and a link to the offline installer :)
I don't have an "Extras", but I do have a "Download Extras". All that does is take me to an option to download the installer, so even though I have already downloaded and installed the game through Galaxy, if I want the offline installer to take to another of my PCs, I have to download the game a second time?
<snip>

think that if your IM is running and you're showing online, that means that you are sitting right there and they can message you whenever they want and expect a response back in a very brief window of time, and if they don't hear back from you they think perhaps you're ignoring them or being an ass or something. I'll end up getting instant messages from such people like: "Hey, how's it going?" ... "Hey are you there?" ... "Hello?" ... "HELLO?????" ... "OK FINE THEN, BE A DICK!!"
If your IM is running and you aren't in front of the machine, you should show as AWAY or IDLE instead of ONLINE. Any decent client can change the status to AWAY when your screensaver or powersave kicks in.

ZenWan: I'd like to have the option to be 'invisible' when online or playing games - I prefer not to advertise my presence if I don't feel like it.
this, please. many times over. and setting profiles [when they arrive] to private.
I got sent the email for the GOG Galaxy Beta but when I click Get It Now a tab is quickly closed then opened.

Normal, just be patient.

Aye, because the standalone installer and Galaxy installer are two different files.

Didn't I just answer you in the other thread???

It just opens the page where you can sign up, so just go there directly to do it:
www.gog.com/galaxy

Beware that you will not receive an invite at once, you'll need to wait some time, probably at least until tomorrow.

It is normal. The alpha testers will be able to update to beta tomorrow so everyone else will probably then also get the invitation:

Pretty much, though you could put Galaxy on your second pc... the copy the game folder over to your other pc and scan and import them game into Galaxy.

styggron: 1. if I want to ONLY use the GOG website will I have to use my own download manager now because GOG is no longer going to be supporting theirs in the near future ?
They don't plan on updating/supporting the current GOG Downloader once Galaxy launches but they don't plan on intentionally breaking it either so it should continue to work for some time at least. There are 3rd party alternative downloaders as well although I haven't used them many people do.

avatar
styggron: 2. Can GOG galaxy for example (if logged in and running) automatically use it's download manager to just download the installers to my hard drive WHEN I visit my library on the website and click on a title to download ?
You can bring up your library directly inside the Galaxy client right now, and there is an option under "More" for each game to download the standalone installer as well as all of the bonus goodies. I've been using that lately to download the latest standalone installers myself rather than doing it the old way through Firefox+GOGDownloader and it works fine. I'm not sure if there is currently a way to have downloads through the web browser that would normally get mapped to GOG Downloader instead get mapped to Galaxy client but I don't see why they couldn't make that option available in the future also if people wanted it. It should in theory be rather trivial to do, and the mechanics might even already be in place in Galaxy. It might be as simple as going into the web browser's options and changing the mapping of the gogdownloader:// URI to point to the galaxy client instead of GOGdownloader. Just speculation on my part for now though, but it would make sense for them to do this at some point if the capability isn't already there.

If they wanted to maximize compatibility, another approach might be to have the website temporarily offer 3 options. Regular downloads, GOG Downloader, and Galaxy Client downloading, and have the latter use a new URI - galaxy:// that points to the client. Then people could configure the website to their preference and all 3 options would work for the time being. Eventually the standalone downloader will be dropped but it should continue to work for some time.

Having said all that though, Galaxy client already acts pretty much as a solid replacement for the GOG downloader, although I initiate the downloads from within the client interface. That will only get better too as they improve the user interface in the client and provide a superior library view or views.
