I went to https://www.gog.com/galaxy to download GOG Galaxy client. To my surprise, the webpage displayed a lot of nothing and no download link whatsoever.
Customer support, when asked, was baffled just as I was.
I pressed on with support to figure out WHY I don't have any download link on that page. Finally, got answer.

As it turns out, CD Project DELIBERATELY HIDES download link of GOG Galaxy on https://www.gog.com/galaxy page, when browser user agent is detected as Linux based!!!!

This is malicious. I understand CD PROJECT does not support Linux, but why hide download link?! I use GOG Galaxy on Linux via Lutris, it works perfectly well, and I have hundreds of hours played, no problems whatsoever.

But simple thing as installing GOG Galaxy on another machine is more and more difficult because they sabotage Linux, no even download link! Customer rep said, that every time I want to download GOG Galaxy and my browser happens to be Linux, I will have to ask Support for a new link! Currently, latest version of link is https://content-system.gog.com/open_link/download?path=/open/galaxy/client/2.0.53.121/setup_galaxy_2.0.53.121.exe but of course that's going to change when new version is out!

What is going on, CD PROJECT?!

E-mail from Customer Support:
"Hello,

As I have mentioned in my previous message - lack of download link for Linux operating system is not a bug, and works as intended. My apologies if that's causing an inconvenience.

If it comes to the GOG GALAXY installer link. When new version of GOG GALAXY will be released you should receive a prompt stating that new update is available. Unfortunately, if that will not end up successful - you will have to contact support and ask for new installer link.

Have a nice day.

Orcan

GOG Galaxy is a Windows only application. The lack of download link is because there is no Linux version to provide a download link for.

The installer link talk is probably a reference to the windows version.

Of course, all I want it access to GOG Galaxy for Windows. Nothing more. Just let me download it and I will be on my marry way.
Current link is:
https://content-system.gog.com/open_link/download?path=/open/galaxy/client/2.0.53.121/setup_galaxy_2.0.53.121.exe

But they HIDE this link on GOG download page, if my browser is detected as Linux, so I can't download it at all!

Normal companies do it like that (example screenshot attached): offer download for whatever platform they support, if you happen to log in from other device, you can still download for other platform.
But CD PROJECT DELIBERATELY sabotages unsupported platforms by hiding all download options when browser is detected to by Linux, for example. What is going on, CD PROJECT?

They hide it because there is no Linux version, and despite most linux users being more technically savvy than their Windows using counterparts (not always true, but usually), They don't offer a download link because someone will download it, thinking it works natively, and find out it doesn't the hard way after wasting the time and efforts of some poor tech support tech who just wants people to READ the instructions on the page before they click the link. So rather than do that, they'd rather take your time to give you a link because they're too busy to deal with the everyday, run-of-the-mill troglodytes that fill any tech support queue.

But Linux is an operating system (kernel), not a browser... *scratches head*

ah, okay sorry misunderstood what you wanted.

Can't help you sadly as I tend to use Heroic Game Launcher for my GOG installs in Linux, tried installing GOG Galaxy in the past under WINE but it was very laggy at the time.

Dude seriously ?

If you are using Windows it will offer you to download the Windows version.

If you are using a Mac it will offer you to download the OSx version. (I supposed you didn't notice that the OSx version was "missing" if you were on Windows and vice-versa)

And if you are using Linux, as there is no Linux version it won't offer you any version.

This is not "malicious" this is not "sabotage" it's just basic functionality. If you are on Linux and want to download the Windows or Mac version just change your user-agent.

Look how browser user agent looks like on non-Windows operating systems:

Your User Agent:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:102.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/102.0

They know my browser is LINUX based, and they block all download options.

On Linux, exe files JUST DON'T WORK unless you download and install windows emulator called Wine, or more integrated alternatives like Lutris. There is no running Windows programs unless user knows exactly what is he doing. So no crying excuse because more Support traffic is generated by Linux users.

Blocking all download options on not supported platforms is just dumb!

Because Galaxy is NOT available for Linux based operation systems... *scratches head, again*

[Sarcasm] I guess you could say this was a case of censorship or denying ones freedom to access publicly available resources ?. [/Sarcasm]

You are unable to understand what essence of my request is.

GOG Galaxy works perfectly well on Linux.
I don't want any technical support or anything.
Do you understand?

I just want them NOT TO BLOCK my ability to download it if I want!

Yes I am serious, you do not understand that Galaxy works perfectly well on Linux. All is required is to download Windows version and you good to go. I don't want any technical support or anything, just NOT TO BLOCK DOWNLOAD LINK, because this is dumb!

Just change you user-agent to Windows, there are tons of add-on allowing you to do that in case your browser don't support it natively.

That could cause them a headache in the long run, if they open it for one it's open for all so what happens if a lot of less tech savvy Linux users start downloading the Galaxy client but then don't understand why it doesn't want to install, they will all contact support which would overload them.

Yes there will be people on Linux who don't know how to fully use it as a lot of Linux Distributions are trying to make it more casual friendly.

Read my first post again, this is about them hiding link on purpose, they expect EVERYONE to ask Customer Support for current download link. Now, this is excessive support generating solution, why not just offer all links to everyone? Why is GOG trying to be so smart and hide links. Look again how normal companies are doing it (screenshot attached). I don't want to be hassled to install browser add-ons to emulate different operating systems, I just want CD PROJECT not to be overly smart about blocking download links without logical reason.

Those other sites offer official install packages for Windows/Mac/ and Linux so they have people that can offer support for all of those packages. GOG only has the Windows installer and more than likely do not have anyone on staff that can help people on Linux if they have a problem.

"Those other sites" (which is almost entire Internet which do it in normal no-nonsense way!) allow you to download their software from Android phone or whatever other device, they don't deliberately block download options if you happen to access their page from other device.
Do you see the difference?
