And an even lower: 4, 4 in hand, 4, 4, 3 in flop, 2 in river. If 2 and 3 are different suits than 4 and 4 then there is no chance of a straight flush, and your four of a kind of 4s should win, correct?

I just realized the even lower hand is possible with 3-3 in hand 3-3-2-2 in flop and turn. I discarded it before thinking an opponent could get a straight flush, but if the flop and turn cards are all different suits, that's not possible. So a four of a kind of 3s seems to be the lowest winning hand possible before the river.

Note that a four of a kind of 2s is not possible, because an opponent could have a higher four of a kind.

Actually it is possible. 2-2-2-2. If you have an Ace in hand, you have the highest possible hand.
Granted, a push is still possible, but you are guaranteed a highest possible hand.
