R8V9F5A2: I think the gameplay concept alone will be enough to make the game successful, even if its not 100% perfect in all areas.
There are few things our mainstream loves more than multiplayer, and combining it with horror is a very smart idea.

I'm in doubt of how commercially successful quality horror can actually be when focused on single-player, looking at all the Alien Isolation special editions that are so cheap today. If a game sells really well the special editions tend to run out rather quickly due to their nature of being in limited supply, but with Alien Isolation they are still very much around.
Either they overestimated their sales or it didn't sell as much as we like to think.

So making a high-quality horror game multiplayer-focused makes more business sense in a way.
huh? Multiplayer and horror are a horrible idea. Because nothing is scarier than kicking back with a bro online and joking about how he just got killed again in the parlour by another player.

pimpmonkey2382.313: Eh, most 007 games are pretty shitty too except for goldeneye.
avatar
tinyE: Exactly! That's one good game, which puts it heads and tails above all other movies to games!

Am I wrong!? :P
I remember Tomorrow Never Dies for the original Playstation being halfway decent. Nothing great mind you, but decent.

Of other franchises, people seemed to like The Matrix: Path of Neo and The Matrix Online (neither of which I got to try), and Enter The Matrix was really fun EXCEPT FOR ALL THE STUPID BUGS THAT I'M NOT AT ALL STILL BITTER ABOUT!!!!
The concept sounds great on paper-lets just hope the gameplay will live up to it.

Gede: I never saw any of the movies. Is there any of them I should skip entirely? Is one of them clearly the best one? Is there any dependency in the story?
avatar
pimpmonkey2382.313: I'd skip anything after 5. The first five were the best IMO.
They managed to get 5 good movies? That is uncommon. Wow! There are so many of them!

I also realized I was confusing Friday the 13th with Halloween.

The first 5 managed to keep the horror vibe, while the rest were either almost psuedo horror comedies

1-4 had continuity. It was human Jason, at the very least. Part 4 is called THE FINAL CHAPTER for a reason... it was the last time Jason was human (or relevant). It was rumored that Tommy was supposed to take over as the new Jason and become possessed by Jason's evil spirit or something. Then they realized what a cheap gravy train they had at Paramount and decided to just keep making more movies. If you just watch parts 1-4 you'll get a satisfying romp through Crystal Lake and a decent ending to the series. Everything from 5 on were garbage.

And that game trailer reminds me of a Trojan condom commercial. Horror/slasher video games have never really had good treatment. I see no reason to think that multiplayer game will be any different.

I always assumed tommy wasn't going to be possessed but just driven nuts and become another imposter.

There have been interviews with Sean Cunningham, Steve Miner and others through the years who said that the original idea was to kill off Jason and if the series was going to move forward, have the new killer be Tommy... all that was predicated on the series (at the time) of at least paying lip service to reality. Bit hard for Jason to keep on killing, what with his head being opened like a ripe coconut by the business end of Tommy's machete. Then the execs took one look at the cost/ROI ratio of the box office returns and said, 'to hell with reality, keep making more of those movies!' And thus we got 20,352 more sequels, prequels, remakes, comic books, and action figures.

Oh I know tommy was going to be the killer, but I'm not so sure on the possession bit as at that time there were still a bit more "reality" based (At least for that series.).

Well, I think that's why there was so much confusion over the story and production of part 5. At the time they really weren't sure how they were going to position Tommy in the overall story arc. It's also one of the 13,000 reasons why part 5 was the drizzling shits.

As far as the possession thing, that's kind of where they ended up going with Jason Goes to Hell, only without Tommy being around... common sense was also MIA. It was like the supernatural aspect got brought up in a production meeting during part 5, but then they didn't get around to fleshing out the idea until 4 movies later. Not a good sign when the brains behind your movie series can't even agree on whether or not to have the main antagonist be a possessed demon from hell. Perhaps those kind of things should be addressed earlier in the creative phase... just sayin'.

I actually find 5 as one of the most enjoyable of the whole series, it actually did something a bit different. Looked to me at the end it wasn't possessed as much as driven insane from his previous experiences and pretty much mentally snapped.

They certainly did something different, that's for sure. Good? I don't think so. Part 5 was one of the fastest shot, and one of the cheapest, coming quick on the success of part 4. I think part of the problem was the actor playing Tommy. He wasn't Corey Feldman, didn't look anything like him, and acted in the movie like he was constipated or something. And the Jason being the ambulance driver/father on a revenge kick? The whole thing was just contrived and poorly thought out, IMO.

I just always liked the retarded hillbilly Jason idea better. A retarded momma's boy running around the woods hacking people up while wearing a hockey mask? That's creepy. A possessed, immortal Jason incapable of harm or death? Cheap pops for an industry craving iconic baddies to build franchises around.

I think most people only hate it because it wasn't the "real" jason, which you wouldn't have known through the entire movie until the last few seconds of the movie. Hell none of the F13 movies were done expensively, and/or "beautifuly" shot.

Well, it was a swerve. People didn't see it coming. And I don't think they liked it.

The idea of new Jason impostors/possessed souls wasn't only done in Friday the 13th. Remember, the Halloween series did something similar with Michael's niece Jamie and the whole cult of thorn thing in Curse of Michael Myers. Slasher flicks always end up painting themselves in corners by trying to kill off their main character, then having to squeeze them back in when the series (and money counters) demand their return. It's also often the death knell to any series. Thankfully, the idea was squashed immediately in the Elm St. series. Freddy's dead only meant Freddy went back to dreamland until the next movie, rather than Freddy's long lost third cousin Albert becoming the new killer.

I actually loved the swerve myself. And thought tommy picking up the mantle after being driven insane COULD have been interesting if they went that way. I would have enjoyed that angle myself, IMO would have been better than a "zombie" Jason coming back from a lightning bolt.
