I have been replaying many FPS and TPS games that I originally played with a 360 controller and having MUCH more fun playing with mouse/keyboard. I will never go back to controllers for any FPS and TPS game from now on. Basically any game that requires alot of shooting, I will only play with M+key. I still love the controller for sword games like The Witcher and driving games. I know that developers add things like auto aim and snap aim to controller option to make the game easier to play, but I just don't enjoy using it.

What prompted me to evaluate how i play my games is that I was struggling to get through Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon with the controller, so i decided to switch to M+key and had no problems at all and it really made the game much more fun, so i decided to go back and replay every game that I finished with controller. It has made all the games so much more enjoyable and much less of a struggle. The M+key has breathed new life to my finished game collection.
M+KB is THE best to play shooters on. Mouse aim is second to none and you don't have to use stuff like autoaim. From here, I recommend trying out some hudless / crosshair-less FPSes if you haven't already. The metro games at Ranger difficulty or crosshair disabled will be very satisfying to you, I feel.

Controllers always sucked for those genres.

But, if I'm going to play a FPS, I'd rather play it old-old-incredibly-old-school and just play with a keyboard.

Better for twin-stick shooters, vertical shooters, fighting games (SF2 and MK), as well as platformers.

You mean PC versions? I'm surprised to hear someone would even try to play them with a gamepad, as they are clearly designed to be played with a mouse+keyboard.

Then again, I recall one time one person in Team Fortress 2 mentioning he is playing with a gamepad. Yep, he was doing very poorly in the game, not being able to hit pretty much anything, turning slowly etc. I hope he was having fun getting killed over and over again.

With console versions you don't really have an option, and the console versions are designed with a gamepad in mind anyway. Hence, I simply avoid playing console FPS games. Like when I first started playing Halo 2 on my XBox, saying "screw this!" when I just couldn't get past the landing bay area in the first level, and switching to play the PC version instead with a mouse and keyboard. Yeah, now it was much better, I finished the game (in the hardest difficulty level).

(It wasn't only the snappier and more precise mouse controls, but also that the graphics in the PC version were sharper so it was easier to discern enemies from the background etc. I also recall I wasn't able to aim and jump at the same time with the XBox version because both actions were supposed to be performed with the same thumb; no such problem with the PC version with mouse+keyboard).

Needless to say, but for some other genres a game pad is great, so I am not gung-ho for not touching a gamepad ever. Each type of game needs its own suitable controllers, one size does not fit all.

Just crank the sensitivity REALLY REALLY HIGH.... problem solved :P He'll turn and aim REALLY FAST and MASSIVELY MISS...
Hmm. While mouse and keyboard are obviously much more accurate for FPS, I find controllers aren't that terrible.

I'm not sure which one it was that I played last, but I grabbed a controller for the less action heavy or puzzle sequences. For third person games I default to controller.

I mean PC games with 360 controller support, i dont own any consoles. I used to play them with the controller because I like to play on my TV (i connect my PC to my TV with long HDMI cable) in my recliner, its more comfortable than hunched over my desktop PC, but now im willing to sacrifice comfort for a more fun experience playing at my desk with mouse/keyboard, its worth the comfort sacrifice because im having alot more fun with the games, but only for FPS and TPS games. Other PC games with controller support, i always play on my TV relaxing in my recliner chair.

Yep, i will definitely be replaying the Metro games with M+key.

Actually the older games like Doom and Quake work well with the gamepad because they dont have mouse aiming, so the gamepad is ideal. I use a gamepad mapping program for those games.

Im currently replaying Mass Effect 3 with mouse/keyboard and its so MUCH more fun than the controller. I just finished Max Payne 3 again with M+key and what a difference it was. Next is Spec Ops: The Line which is also another third person shooter that i originally played with controller.

I prefer to play most games with controller, but FPS, TPS and RTS, i will only use M+key from now on. Its much more enjoyable and less of a struggle.

For me it largely depends on whether the game has free look or not. I played Final Doom, Alien Trilogy, Disruptor, Exhumed (Powerslave), Tenka on PSX without any problems but I can't imagine myself playing Alien vs Predator, NOLF or Half-Life with a gamepad. The only exception was Halo on XBOX since at the time, it was exclusive to that console. It was a pain in the bottoms but I enjoyed it better later on PC.

I've played lots of PC games with a wireless mouse and keyboard, lying on the sofa. It can be done.

Quake certainly has mouse aim, it doesn't differ from modern FPs games in that regard.

Doom kinda has mouse aim too, but it isn't quite as useful as you aim only in the horizontal level, and overall the game has quite heavy autoaim anyway. I guess it still allows you to turn faster etc.

Welcome to the future. Erm, the present? ;p

M&KB will always be miles better than controller for FPS games, even so for third person perspective, because you can turn stupidly fast & still be accurate, where as your options on a controller are put settings up really high & miss loads, or keep it low & take nth minutes to do a 180 hehe.

Each to their own I guess, but I just wouldn't dream of using a controller for anything other than driving games or platformers at a push if I just want to sit back & play.

Even micro$oft did trials in the past with M&KB users v controller users & in games, the latters got completely destroyed.
If I ever watch streams of games being played & they're using a controller, I shudder & find another streamer haha.

P.S. You know controllers aren't that good for fps, when they have to add things like this into the games...
I don't know how to use joystick to aim in FPS games, I just look like a retard staring around.
They don't make the games more fun, it just makes aiming easier and that makes the games more fun.
I suppose training a lot with a controller would have the same effect.
There are people out there better at aiming with a controller than I am with a mouse, but that's not saying much.
Serious Sam!!!
