Umm crazy question, I was going to post in a topic. I was going to quote a couple of other people in the topic. I wasn't sure how and thought if I clicked on the Post # beside the posted date that it would add it in to my post. Didn't seem to do it for me though. However, it did add a red arrow beside the people's names until I left the page.

If this does something negative sorry guys. But could someone please tell me what exactly this does do? I was afraid to keep clicking thinking someone might get on and GOG be all like hey this guy reported you. Thumbs up to whoever can tell me what this does and how exactly to add more than one quote in a post. Thanks

Clicking the post number makes a URL link to their post, and the red tag shows that you are using a URL to point to a specific post.

If you want to quote multiple people in a single post and are using the basic forum functionality, you may just want to manually add in tags. For example, replace curly braces with brackets:

{quote_1}
This would link to your post if I had used brackets
{/quote}

{quote_2}
And this lets you link to another post
{/quote}

EDIT: Heh, forgot a point. If you manually add in the quote and /quote tags, you'll need to copy by hand the parts of their text that you want to quote. Note than when I quoted you, I only quoted the first paragraph? To make it clear what I'm replying to (and to be considerate and save space and not quote an entire wall of text like some people do) I edited out the second paragraph. The first person you quote, by default, will have their entire post quoted. After that, if you want it all in a single post, you either need to make follow-on posts quickly enough that the forum software auto-merges your posts, or do it by hand.

[url= And if you're paying attention (not that you necessarily should be) you can see from this example that you can also put entire sentences or even paragraphs in malformed URL tags.][/url]

If you click on "reply" on OneFiercePuppy's post above, you can take a look at how it is all laid out, demonstrating just what he told you, replying to your quote

Once you click the chain symbol and you see the red arrow by the post you are trying to link copy and paste the URL at the top of the page. Paste the URL in your post and when someone clicks it they will go the the post you linked.

Example: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/forum_quoting_question/post1

Ok so once I add the brackets for begin and end quote, I just copy and paste the part of the post I want to use? I'm guessing the number (quote_2) and so on have to match the post number I'm quoting in order for it to show the username with avatar?

You all are right.

Now FoxbodyMustang, click on reply button and you'll see how this looks with multi-quoting : )

There is two, just seeing if I did this right. =)

EDIT: Ok cool, consider this finished. Thanks again for the quick support.

One more note, if you make a mistake (for example, forgetting the /quote), the website will take literally forever to finish posting the message. If this happens, you might want to copy your message to the clipboard so that you can paste it into a new message and fix the problem.

dtgreene: the website will take literally forever to finish posting the message.
This also seems to happen when you mismatch the tags for quote and url.

When this happens to me (the Infinite Spinny-Icon of Incorrect Tag Usage), I usually just close the window, wait several seconds and refresh the page -- just to make sure my post didn't go through after all; assuming it didn't, I then go to the "Recently Closed Windows" section of Firefox's "History" menu (I assume most other browsers have something similar) and reopen the most recently closed GOG.com window (which should still contain the full text of your post from before you closed it), fix the bad tag(s), then re-post. Note that you'll often still get the Infinite Spinny-Icon when clicking "Post" this second time, but -- assuming everything is correct -- it should still be accepted by the forum system. To be on the safe side, before you close the edit window for good, switch to the tab with the forum topic you're posting in, wait a moment, and refresh the page. Usually, the post will show up almost immediately, unless A.) you missed some problem with your tags after all, or B.) the forums are strained, as during the early hours of a sale or major release.

I'm surprised by how many people who complain of the forums eating their posts don't think to try this. It certainly beats trying to re-write a super-long post from memory. : P

Also, if you want to quote something from a source other than another post in the same thread, do this:

<quote>It was a dark and stormy night.</quote>

-- but, as before, use [ and ] instead of < and > . It will appear like so:
It was a dark and stormy night.
I wish more people would use this feature, as it makes it much more clear when you're, well, quoting someone else. ; )
You can, of course, combine this with URL tags to link to whatever you're quoting.
