Hey everyone.

American here that's recently begun exploring things that weren't popular or didn't receive a release in the US during their initial run. I've developed an interest in what are often dubbed "Euro Platformers", of the kind that were most popular on the Amiga in their heyday. I had a little experience with them on the Sega Genesis/MD through ports like Shadow of the Beast, Risky Woods, and Turrican.

I know it's a broad and rather loosely defined genre, I'd love some recommendations and discussion with other enthusiasts or especially Europeans that enjoyed (or didn't enjoy!) them in their time.

Off the top of my head (and i'm unsure if this got a release in the US) but 9 Lives springs to mind. It only saw a release on the Amiga and Atari ST:

low rated
Try Shadow Man: Remastered for a platform / tomb raider / metroidvania / dark souls hybrid. Playing it right now and it is a masterpiece by every definition.

I mean I've played Shadow Man and that doesn't really have anything to do with the topic.

I feel like someone with a James Pond avatar is someone I can trust unconditionally for an informed opinion on this subject. :) Thank you.
I think my favourite game back then was The Great Giana Sisters on the C64.

Aside Turrican and its sequels (a collection is currently available on PS4 and Switch), I would also recommend the first Rayman (available here, but it's hard) and I would have recommended Superfrog, had it not been removed years ago from digital stores. I do remember playing the first Zool back in the day (currently available on Steam), but I can't vouch for its quality, other than to say that it looked nice.

Incidentally, I was able to find a thread for Euro PC platformers on Hardcore Gaming 101:

One of the games in the thread, Gods, is currently available on Steam for a dollar, but will be removed on 27th March:

Thanks, I'll be sure to check it out! I had a C64 for a little while as a kid but only had a collection of bootleg arcade games on it. I only ever really played River Raid and Popeye much and only found out later how many badass games and what cool sound the system had.

Funny enough I have Rayman and Gods: Remastered (for the PS1, and for the Switch). I've been playing Gods on and off, it's a tough one but the theme is great. There really aren't enough games, God of War and Age of Mythology notwithstanding, that get that epic ancient myth feel.
Apart from Turrican series (which you mention) one of mine favorites was Ruff 'n' Tumble on Amiiga (https://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=920). It came a litte bit late, so is often over looked, but it is really great gem of a game.

I also spent a lot of time with Switchblade II (https://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=1028).

and off course the James Pond series, especially James Pond 2: Codename Robocod -

and Zool 1 and 2 are are a must - https://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=4498

as well as Superfrog - https://www.lemonamiga.com/games/details.php?id=1023

Two great games, think (original) Prince of Persia in scifi worlds.

I've played Another World/Out of this World many times over the years, first time was on a Mac port in the mid 90's. What a great game! It might have been the first game I played with polygon characters. I've always liked the way it tells its story, it's big on the "show, don't tell".

Flashback I played on the Genesis/Mega Drive and never got that far. Cinematic platformers I tend to both love and hate. My favorites in that genre are probably Another World, Prince of Persia II and Blackthorne.

I don't think I'd call Flashback or Another World/Out of this World a "Euro Platformer," as there was clearly something else that was intended. It's very much a cinematic experience.

A traditional Euro platformer would be something like Jim Power, or Soccer Kid. Another pair of examples would be the James Pond and Zool series of games.

Then of course there's the screen-flip platformers on the EARLY systems, particularly the Miner Willy series, especially Jet Set Willy.

Can Jazz Jackrabbit be considered a Europlatformer?
It's a US published game but the programmer was Dutch,
There was Rick Dangerous 1 & 2. Hard as nails but was fun to play.
