JMich: Question, are you curious about people eating cat and/or dog meat, whether it's legal or not to do so, or whether or not it's a Christmas tradition for the Swiss to do so?
Well, it seems eating cats and dogs is totally legal in Switzerland, just commercial distribution of their meat is forbidden.
Apparently cat meat is a traditional Christmas dinner in some areas of Switzerland, but no one seems to know how widespread it still is...probably not very.
Its probably as true as the US invading Turkey every Thanksgiving to eat the Turkish people.
I've read that there are no stray cats, dogs, or rabbits in North Korea because people ate them all.

tinyE: The video is from "Faces of Death" of which I own a copy, and OF COURSE IT'S FAKE! :P The whole "Faces of Death" movie is fake!
Gosh, watched a few clips on youtube.. I probably won't be doing music-talk in the "undeletable thread" today..

When that movie came out in the 70s we sat around as kids and watched it and it was the ultimate taboo and we used to debate about what, if any, of the scenes might be fake. :P

Ten years ago I saw the DVD for sale and snagged it for some nostalgia, not having seen it in thirty years, and we talk about games not aging well....HOLY SHIT!!! XD It is so bad ,and a five year old with a camcorder could make more realistic scenes.

People who still curse the movie out as obscene need to see it again. Maybe it was obscene forty years ago but now it's just silly. Good for a laugh and honestly, aside from some actual stock footage taken from operating rooms (which you can see every night on The Discovery Channel) it's not really even that graphic.

I want to know if Swiss people do so and how they justify it.

From the translated comment section of

morolf: Apparently consumption of dog meat is also allowed in Switzerland (bad news for that stupid dog from Fallout 1):

which I assume is mostly done and voted by Swiss people - - accoding to the percentages of votes given to those protesting and defending ("irrelevancing / whatever-ing") the dog meat consumtion - I can 95% verdict that dogs and cats are indeed being eaten in Switzerland.

For example, the comment "Dogs are livestock. Either you eat meat or not" got 467 supportive and 38 opposing votes. Woohoo..

My guess? The Swiss don't care if you eat dog or cat or not, similar to how Americans don't really care if you eat roadkill or not. The laws against selling it are probably due to the inability to check the conditions of the animal before slaughter, not the consumption per se.
Could it have been an earlier tradition? Depends on what access to meat they had, other than dogs and/or cats. In Crete, traditional Christmas meat is pig, since the pig was usually slaughtered in December, then the whole meat of it was prepared in various ways to last the year (smoked, cured, vats of oil and fat, sausages etc). In areas where pigs were not common, a different animal could have been substituted for the traditional Christmas meal (turkey comes to mind). So having a cat or dog for Christmas, if that was the only available animal one could slaughter, would make sense.

KiNgBrAdLeY7: And they eat, they neither play with nor waste their food.
No, they don't play with it, just torture the poor things in the process as they have no respect or love for animals.

Dogs are crammed into cages, literally on top of each other.

Animals hung and skinned alive for their fur, then thrown on a heap.
This thread has been active for a while now and nobody has yet to mention why their cheese has so many fucking big holes in it.

tinyE: why their cheese has so many fucking big holes in it.
It's due to mice. If the cat doesn't do a proper job, it gets eaten.

Yeah... The few scenes from "From Beyond" (on original VHS) I watched accidentally when I was around 11, gave me quite some food for thought >:) Specially the monster itself and the worm in the basement near stairs. >:)

I guess from producer perspective, controversial stuff never goes out of fashion, so that jelly has paid off. :)

Probably for masturbation.
Why is it taboo to eat a cat or a dog or even a horse exactly? You know cows are very outgoing creatures. They prance around the field and do silly shit and basically act like giant dogs but somehow we justify killing them because they taste fucking delicious.

So what if dog or a cat turns out to be delicious as well?

CARRiON.FLOWERS: Why is it taboo to eat a cat or a dog or even a horse exactly?
Simple, because they're cute.

Rabbits are cute too and those are less taboo to eat then a cat or dog. I wouldn't exactly call a horse cute either.

I think it might just be the fact we sort of humanize these animals. We talk to them like they can understand us and form bonds and they become a part of your family. So when someone says they eat dog you probably instantly think of your own dog and it becomes a a harder reality to swallow.

I've had tons of dogs and cats and I loved them all, but I'd still opt to try out cooked dog or cat meat at least once.
