Breja: You know, the funny thing is I was recently considering making a thread about The Sword of Shannara, which I only just read now (or at least half of it, I couldn't force myself to go beyond that), and how I can't understand how Terry Brooks wasn't sued into oblivion for what must be the most blatant, lazy and shameless rip-off I've ever seen.

yogsloth: Agree 1000%.

I made it maybe 200 pages into the first one and hucked it into the trash.

Wheel of Time and Wizard's First Rule series are both bad, but Shanarra was beat-for-beat, word-for-word plagiarism.
Sword of Shannara is trash, but Elfstones of Shannara is very, very good. You're doing yourself a major disservice by skipping it. No need to read Sword first.

What's your problem with the Wheel of Time, besides annoying female characters?

My biggest problem was twofold: the characters were idiots, and literally nothing happened for thousands of pages.

I actually got to... I think book six. Pretty far in. And I realized that nothing of any consequence whatsoever had happened since at least book three.

All the characters just sat around being stupid and timid, and I just had enough. I had the entire series and donated it to my local library.

GR00T: If you think that's a blatant rip-off, you should read Dennis L. McKiernan's Iron Tower books. Well, maybe you shouldn't actually read them, but you should look up the plot, and be even more astounded.
I browsed through the first Iron Tower book and couldn't believe it was legal to publish such blatant plagiarism.
In comparison the first Shannara book (only read 1/3 of it, though) is clever and original.
Lord of the Rings ripped off The Hobbit too, and Avatar ripped off Pocohontas.

Gerin: Lord of the Rings ripped off The Hobbit too
lol - good one
Star Wars Episode 7 ripped off Star Wars Episode 4.

Star Wars Episode IV ripped off Star Wars Episode VII.

While we're at it, Star Wars Episode IV ripped off Star Wars.
Nero Burning ROM ripped off the Great Fire of Rome.

WinterSnowfall: Nero Burning ROM ripped off the Great Fire of Rome.
That's actually really clever.

Randalator: Who cares? A Song of Ice and Fire completely ripped off Harry Potter, anyway. Stephenie Meyer should totally sue J. R. R. Tolkien for that dick move!
avatar
GR00T: I think the funniest one I ever saw was someone saying Rowling should sue Tolkien for ripping off Harry Potter. It was posted in all seriousness, which made it that much more funny.
Worst one I've seen was someone saying Meyer should sue the remake of The Wolfman for. stealing the concept of Werewolves from Twilight. Well, it started out accusing them of ripping off werewolves, then it sort of devolved into seemingly accusing the film of being anti-werewolf propaganda and offensive to real-life werewolves. Twilight fans were a strange bunch.

But.. but... the old guy had a FLASHLIGHT! That's all I remember.

I was just about to start up Wheel of Time again... couldn't remember why I stopped as a teen, but I do have all of them except the ones written by Sanderson. All I remember is a lot of braid-tugging.

I just ripped off that weeping scab on my cock. What of it?

...Oh, you mean the other meaning of ripped off. Well then, don't mind me. I'll show myself out.

Enebias: Hm... this thread was a joke thread about a game ripping off another, I think.
I seem to recall I stated Warcraft is a blatant rip-of of Warhammer there.
Ehhhh I dug into both franchises lore and at this point I believe they are now completely unrecognizable from each other.

Especially with regards to the Human factions. I mean the Kingdom of Stormwind and Lordaeron are nothing like the Empire of Man and Bretonnia.

And the world of Warhammer is more analogous to real world earth, but extremely fantasized, even the map is shaped like earth with an Africa, an Americas, and a Eurasia.

And Warcraft is more noblebright and nicer then Warhammer.
