Can't stand that series, but oh well, seems like most enjoy that filth.

P.S. I don't need this game here, just sayin'. :P
Never played the original but I heard it was virtually impossible.

Breja: I don't. I've no interest in games that rely on being super-duper difficult as a main selling point.
It's actually a common misconception that Dark Souls games are super hard. The only people who think they are are the idiots who keep wanting to rush in swinging at every enemy, and refuse to learn the bosses' attack patterns.

If you just play patiently, watch out for traps and ambushes, wait for an opening to attack enemies and pay attention to bosses' attack patterns, Dark Souls isn't that hard.

Edit: Oh, and while I already own the game on Steam, I would pay for a DRM-free version that's a better port.

I absolutely know how you feel about the games but to be honest the Souls series is not nearly as sadistic as people make it out to be. I've played quite a lot of Demon's Souls and some Dark Souls and as long as I actually believed that the games are specifically designed to make me suffer I hated them. Later on it occurred to me that the games really just follow old-school design (it IS a successor to King's Field, a series of first person dungeon crawlers for the PSOne and PS2) and that none of the punishment is that bad. Incidentally I had played a few classic dungeon crawlers at roughly the same time as I played Dremons' Souls and the latter felt almost like a casual spiritual successor to those. Heck, older console games with rare save spots (or ones where you can't save at all!) can easily waste more of your time than Souls, badly balanced or technically flawed games can be infinitely more frustrating.

Truth be told, if it weren't for the radical design philosophy of constant gratification and hand-holding prevalent in most games developed since the start of the last console generation, the Souls series wouldn't have its rep, it just stands out among the competition. Combine that with social media and a generation of players and even reviewers who have never used DOS and don't even know what an Amiga is and there's your "game forged in the depths of hell". Sure, there's some trial and error involved and obscure mechanics but it adds atmosphere and depth.

Anyway, I really love the style of the Souls games and have more fun enjoying its beautifully crafted worlds than anything any other games throw at me these days. Sure, there's some frustrating moments but it's worth it to suffer through those and there are ways to play the games comparably safely and you can quite easily switch to easier methods (like ranged combat and magic) at pretty much any point as far as I can tell. And getting past the harder moments is pretty satisfying.

I've played it for a couple of minutes (just to see how well it runs on my PC; yes it runs fine), but what I heard that it isn't that kind of difficulty that would make it impossible to finish, just that it needs perseverance or something.

Oh well, one day I will play it for real and find out myself, if it is really virtually impossible or merely just needing little dedication to finish.

EDIT: Well, apparently what F4LLOUT is saying above I guess. :)

F4LL0UT: snip
Might all be true, but I'm still not interested. I don't have patience for trial and error and memorising bosses anymore. Nothing about those games looks or sounds fun to me. It's doesn't look like a world I want to explore or the type of game I'd have fun with. No manual saving is pretty much the final nail in the coffin for me.

Well, those certainly are valid reasons not to play the games. Just wanted to make sure you're not missing out on them for all the wrong ones which is a mistake I've made with far too many games over the years.
I don't have time to waste days just to "git gud" enough to defeat even the first boss...
I'll get it on Steam instead. I'm completely done getting new shit on GOG (not that they're getting this one anyways). I wonder if owners of the original version will get the remaster free?

Hm kinda interesting I think. Might get it (once it has a decent price tag), always wanted to give it a try but the bad port quality kept me from ever buying it.

I highly doubt. It's BANDAI Namco. Don't you remember what they did with DS2?

greeklover: They can always give it to Beamdog. They know how to give us an "enhanced edition" :p
That's a very good point, there is already a fan patch called dsfix, which fixes the resolution issue, so perfect for beamdogs modus operandi.

On OP, Will a remaster save the original game, there was a lot wrong with the original, graphics, controller, still console focused. I can't see it myself.
When the remaster is out and the servers for the old version will be shut down at some point, there's a chance we'll see the old version on GOG since this place seems to be seen as a dump for some.
Eh...

50% off for PC users is kind of tempting, but I really need to hear port impressions before considering it.
Have had my head filled with that announcement in a single day time as i follow the happy hob runs on twitch.... I would have liked a Demon's Souls remake, not really looking forward to this remaster. Probably as i still have Bloodborne to finish and Ds 3 to buy and play someday before this could hype me in a few years.
